Abstract:
Discusses manifestations of hostility toward immigrants in the USA at the end of the 19th century - against Catholics, Chinese, and Jews. Describes the nativist organizations formed to oppose immigration and emphasizes their anti-Catholicism and antisemitism. Religious antisemitism had existed in America during the 17th-18th centuries, but from the end of the 19th century racism became prevalent, together with conspiracy theories and hatred of the Jews as symbols of capitalist rapacity. Nativist pressures led to the passage of laws excluding Chinese immigrants in the 1890s-1900s which anticipated the restrictive immigration legislation of 1921 and 1924.
