Je mehr das Ideal der Gleichheit an Bedeutung gewann, desto heftiger wurde der Streit über kulturelle und religiöse Differenz. Davon zeugen die Auseinandersetzungen über die Judenemanzipation und die jüdischen Erfahrungen von Gleichberechtigung und Diskriminierung seit dem späten 18. Jahrhundert. Anhand der Geschichte strittiger Begriffe wie Assimilation, Minderheit oder Mehrheit, Ethnizität und Stamm erzählt dieses Buch eine Geschichte der Pluralität, die bis in unsere Gegenwart reicht. Es beschreibt eine Wirklichkeit voller Widersprüche, in der es gilt, die Spannung zwischen Gleichheit und Freiheit auszuhalten.

    Abstract: In dieser Studie wird untersucht, wie mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche (Kultur-)Geschichte in deutsch-jüdischen Periodika der Jahre 1837–1938 aufgenommen, dargestellt und bewertet worden ist. Mit der exemplarischen Analyse wird eine Forschungslücke gefüllt. Die zentrale Fragestellung ist, inwiefern die veränderte Perspektive ein – verglichen mit dem gegenwärtigen – neues Geschichtsbild eröffnet. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse liegt dabei auf den die jüdische Bevölkerung betreffenden Aspekten. Die Darstellung der modernen Geschichtsforschung ist der Analyse der Artikel in jedem Themenfeld als Grundlage vorangestellt.     Abstract: To Christians the Iberian Peninsula was Hispania, to Muslims al-Andalus, and to Jews Sefarad. As much as these were all names given to the same real place, the names also constituted ideas, and like all ideas, they have histories of their own. To some, al-Andalus and Sefarad were the subjects of conventional expressions of attachment to and pride in homeland of the universal sort displayed in other Islamic lands and Jewish communities; but other Muslim and Jewish political, literary, and religious actors variously developed the notion that al-Andalus or Sefarad, its inhabitants, and their culture were exceptional and destined to play a central role in the history of their peoples.In Iberian Moorings Ross Brann traces how al-Andalus and Sefarad were invested with special political, cultural, and historical significance across the Middle Ages. This is the first work to analyze the tropes of Andalusi and Sefardi exceptionalism in comparative perspective. Brann focuses on the social power of these tropes in Andalusi Islamic and Sefardi Jewish cultures from the tenth through the twelfth century and reflects on their enduring influence and its expressions in scholarship, literature, and film down to the present day

    Abstract: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten " Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

Hamburg ist zentraler Flucht- und Transitort in zeithistorischen Migrationskontexten wie der französischen Emigration in den 1790ern und der Auswanderung in die USA ab 1800, aber auch für Flucht und Deportationen im Nationalsozialismus sowie Migrationsbewegungen nach 1945 bis heute.Der Band versammelt interdisziplinäre Beiträge namhafter Autor_innen, welche die Vielfalt dieser Aspekte betrachten - auch unter Einbezug von Untersuchungen der gegenwärtigen Wohnpraktiken von Geflüchteten in Hamburg. The Jews in the Bohemian Lands experienced several political regimes in the period from 1918 to the late 1940s: the Habsburg Empire, the first democratic Czechoslovak republic, the post-Munich authoritarian Czecho-Slovak republic, the Nazi regime, renewed Czechoslovak democracy and the Communist regime.     Abstract: Israel und Palästina - Was sich heute als politisch scheinbar ausweglose Situation präsentiert, entsprang einst dem optimistischen, wenn auch naiven Traum, mit der Gründung des Staates Israel 1948 eine friedliche Gesellschaft für alle Religionen zu errichten. Dazu rief der Nationalökonom Edgar Salin (1892-1974) im Jahr 1958 das »Israel Economic and Sociological Research Project (IESRP)« ins Leben, das eine zentrale Rolle bei der Errichtung der »neuen Städte« in Israel spielen sollte. Die Beiträge spüren diesem Projekt und seiner kulturpolitischen Bedeutung, aber auch seiner Nähe zu Planungsdebatten und Aufbaufragen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland nun erstmals systematisch nach.Mit Beiträgen von Eliezer Ben-Rafael, Meron Benvenisti, Jörn Düwel, Zvi Efrat, Anton Föllmi, Rachel Kallus, Ruth Kark, Anna Minta, Andreas Nachama, Willi Oberkrome, Martin Peschken, Bertram Schefold, Axel Schildt, Julius H.     Abstract: Der Weltpolitiker Shimon Peres gehört zu den außergewöhnlichsten und kontroversesten Figuren des Zeitgeschehens: Der »ewige Politiker« prägte das zionistische Projekt sowie die israelische Politik und Geschichte seit den 1950er Jahren bis heute wie kein anderer. Ebenso souverän wie scharfsinnig schildert und deutet die Autorin ein scheinbar widersprüchliches Leben: Der Friedensnobelpreisträger ist zugleich Vater der israelischen Atomstreitmacht; der Zivilpolitiker prägte das militarisierte Israel; der »Mann des Friedens« steht für Israels Tragik der Friedensunfähigkeit. Peres’ politischer Werdegang erzählt die Geschichte der Durchsetzung des Zionismus und gleichzeitig seines Scheiterns; er verkörpert das politische Ringen um Sicherheit und Legitimität, verrät aber ein Israel, das eine politische Lösung mit den Palästinensern längst aufgegeben hat. Auf der Grundlage auch kaum bekannter Quellen wirft diese intellektuelle Biographie ein neues Licht auf die politische Kultur Israels und auf einen der schwierigsten Konflikte des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts.

    Abstract: Pri ha-Pardes (Früchte des Obstgartens) ist eine Reihe der Vereinigung für Jüdische Studien e.V., welche in Verbindung mit dem Institut für Jüdische Studien der Universität Potsdam publiziert wird. Pri ha-Pardes möchte kleineren wissenschaftlichen Studien, Forschungen am Rande der großen Disziplinen und exzellenten Masterarbeiten eine Publikationsplattform bieten. Die Freie Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung (FWV) wurde 1881 als Studentenorganisation an der Berliner Universität – der heutigen Humboldt-Universität – gegründet und bestand bis zu ihrer Auflösung im Jahre 1933. Diese Studentenorganisation hatte es sich zum Ziel gesetzt der sich im Zuge des ‚Berliner Antisemitismus-Streites‘ ausbreitenden judenfeindliche Stimmung an den Universitäten entgegenzutreten und wurde dabei von bedeutenden Professoren wie zum Beispiel Theodor Mommsen und Rudolf Virchow unterstützt. Für viele späteren herausragende Persönlichkeiten war die Freie Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung der Ort der ersten Selbstverwirklichung – unter ihnen befanden sich Jakob van Hoddis, Kurt Hiller und Wilhelm Fliess. In den von der FWV organisierten Vorträgen sprachen viele namhafte Persönlichkeiten der Zeit zu aktuellen gesellschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Fragen. Die beiden hier erstmals neu herausgegebenen Taschenbücher der FWV aus den Jahren 1908 und 1931 enthalten neben Selbstdarstellungen des Vereins, Artikeln zu zeitgenössischen Diskursen auch die Namen und Themen der Vortragsredner und machen sie somit zu wichtigen kulturhistorischen Dokumenten des Kaiserreiches und der Weimarer Republik. Die Geschichte der Studentenorganisation, ihre Bedeutung innerhalb der deutschen Universitätsgeschichte und die Rolle einzelner Mitglieder werden in wissenschaftlichen Artikeln gewürdigt.
