Isidor Stern was enrolled in the Jewish elementary school at the age of six years. In 1868 he was sent for further studies to his uncle in Pyritz, where he attended the local Gymnasium (high school). Recollections of his Bar Mitzvah in 1870. Rebellion against the rigid laws of orthodox Judaism. Continuation of his education at a Catholic Gymnasium in Schrimm, where he experienced antisemitism and left the school. Work in a bank in Berlin. Relationship to his younger siblings. Work in a spirit producing company. Socialist activities. In 1879 his house was raided and he had to leave his job due to his political affiliations. He got a position for his company in Spain in 1880. Due to his growing competence he was ordered back to Posen and became one of the directors in 1886. Isidor Stern abandoned his political activities and expanded the company to Berlin. Technical and social reforms. Expansion of the technical use of spirit. Detailed description of professional life. Marriage with Olga Fraenkel in 1888. Birth of his sons Fritz and Walter. Move to Berlin in 1896. Birth of his daughter Charlotte. Both his sons served in World War One.     Kurzfassung: The memoir is in a published article. Lotte Gruenwald grew up in an assimilated Jewish family. Her father was a pediatrician. Her mother was a painter, who also worked in her husband's practice. Childhood recollections of family life. Both her parents were liberal democrats and politicly interested. Lotte's father was member of a Jewish lodge and contributed regularly to Jewish welfare organisations. The family life was untouched by religion. Recollections of the celebration of Jewish holidays at her orthodox paternal grandparents. Memories of her school years during World War One. Move to a small town in the Swabian countryside (Nuertingen), where here father was stationed as a military physician. Lotte was enrolled in the local gymnasium (high school), where she was one of the few female students. Move to Mannheim after the war. Lotte became a member of the local youth movement. After her graduation in 1926, Lotte studied literature, philosophy and art history at the university of Heidelberg. First awareness of antisemitism at university. Studies in Geneva, Frankfurt and Munich. Graduation and marriage with Walter Gruenwald in 1931. Birth of their sons Rolf (1932) and Hans (1935). Nazi take-over and first boycotts of Jewish stores. Delayed preparations for their emigration. Recollections of the night of the November pogrom in 1938. Her husband was taken to the Dachau concentration camp. Fervent endeavors to arrange exit permits. In October 1939 they were issued visas for Chile and left Germany via Italy. Start of a new life in Valparaiso. Language difficulties. Lotte obtained a position as a teacher in an English high school. Her husband founded a small business. Return to Germany years after the war.

Memories of the Rotenburg Jewish community. Recollections of family life. Political unrest and signs of the approaching dangers of Nazism. Move to Leipzig after the Nazi-take-over in 1933. First contact with Jews from Galicia and Poland in their traditional gowns. Chanan (Hans) became a member of the local German-Jewish youth movement. In 1937 he was sent by his parents to live with relatives in Amsterdam. Last summer vacation with his parents at the North Sea. In the night of the November pogrom in 1938 his father was arrested and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. Chanan's sister Edith was sent to England with a Kindertransport in 1939. Outbreak of World War II. Occupation of Holland in 1940. Anti-Jewish regulations. Chanan became a member of a Maccabi youth group. Training at an agricultural plant in the North of Holland (Werkdorp). Move to Gouda in 1941, where he worked as a gardener. First deportations to concentration camps in the East.
    Kurzfassung: Second part: Decision to attempt illegal emigration. With the help of Kurt Hannemann he received false identity papers and left Gouda in time to escape deportation to Poland. Life underground in Amsterdam. In April 1943 he left Amsterdam for the Belgium border in Breda. Escape to the French border in Roubaix and to Paris. Life underground in Rouen, Toulouse and Bordeaux. Various plans to cross the border to Spain failed. Contacts to the French resistance. Interrogation and imprisonment by the Gestapo. Release and escape to Spain via the Pyrenees in 1944.
