Kurzfassung: Summarizes results of a survey conducted in Ukraine among young people born in 1983-89. The survey consisted of writing an essay on the Holocaust or participation in focus-groups. In the sample of those who wrote an essay there were 74 people from Lvov, 74 from Poltava, and 89 from Kharkov. The method of critical discourse analysis was applied to the essays. The analysis showed some differences in the discourses in various regions. The respondents in Western Ukraine (Lvov) preferred anti-racist, interpretational, and neutralist discourses, and only 5.4% resorted to antisemitic discourse. The respondents in Central Ukraine (Poltava) and Eastern Ukraine (Kharkov) preferred anti-racist, interpretational, and antisemitic discourses. 10.8% of Lvov respondents resorted to regional discourse, which was almost absent in the essays in Poltava and Kharkov. This means that the young in Central and Eastern Ukraine do not regard the Holocaust as an event that is relevant for Ukraine. The focus-groups showed that most of the participants received basic knowledge of the Holocaust from their school lessons.

Kurzfassung: On pp. 369-380, reflects on the transformation of the collective memory of the Holocaust in the USSR and, in particular, in independent Ukraine (since 1991). In Ukraine, the memory of the Holocaust is intertwined with the memory of other horrific events, such as the famine of 1932-33, memories of which were suppressed in the Soviet period. Now, in Ukrainian textbooks, there is a tendency to present material on the Holocaust in the context of World War II, rather than as part of the history of Ukraine during the war. The only exception to this rule is the textbook by Yaroslav Hrytsak, published in 2000. Pp. 381-392 discuss a survey conducted in 2002 in four schools in Kharkiv, aiming to ascertain what the pupils know and think about the Holocaust.
