Abstract:
Discusses the law issued by Napoleon I on 17 March 1808. This legislation limited, to some degree, the principle of the legal equality of the Jews granted during the French Revolution. It concerned the cancellation of debts to the Jews by some categories of people (e.g. minors, married women, and others). It was imposed because of complaints about Jewish usurers in Alsace, and was limited to the eastern provinces of France.
