    Abstract: Gennady Estraikh's book explores the birth, growth, demise and afterlife of the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The History of Birobidzhan looks at how the shtetl was widely used in Soviet propaganda as a perfect solution to the 'Jewish question', arguing that in reality, while being demographically and culturally insignificant, the JAR played a key, and essentially detrimental, role in determining Jewish rights and entitlements in the Soviet world. Estraikh brings together a broad range of Russian and Yiddish sources, including archival materials, newspaper articles, travelogues, memoirs, belles-letters, and scholarly publications, as he describes and analyses the project and its realization not in isolation, but rather in the context of developments in both domestic and international life. As well as offering an assessment of the Birobidzhan project in the contexts of Soviet and Jewish history, the book also focuses on the contemporary 'Jewish' role of the region which now has only a few thousand Jewish occupants amongst its residents

    Abstract: Surviving photographs of Jewish Viennese men during the fin-de-siècle and interwar periods - both the renowned cultural luminaries and their many anonymous coreligionists - all share a striking sartorial detail: the tailored suit. Yet, until now, the adoption of the tailored suit and its function in the formation of modern Jewish identities remains under-researched. Jews in Suits uses a rich range of written and visual sources, including literary fiction and satire, 'ego-documents', photography, trade catalogues, invoices, and department store culture, to propose a new narrative of men, fashion, and their Jewish identities. It reveals that dressing in a modern manner was not simply a matter of assimilation, but rather a way of developing new models of Jewish subjectivity beyond the externally prescribed notion of 'the Jew'. Drawing upon fashionable dress, folk costume, religious dress, avant-garde, oppositional dress, typologies which are often considered separate from one another, it proposes a new way of reading men and clothing cultures within an iconic cultural milieu, offering insights into the relationship of clothing and grooming to the understanding of the self

    Abstract: "Jewish Imaginaries of the Spanish Civil War provides unprecedented engagement with the Spanish Civil War as a point of departure and of compounding return for various writers and artists producing Jewish imaginaries who volunteered to fight fascism in the Iberian Peninsula in the late 1930s or responded from abroad, as well as their successors. These essays demonstrate the importance that this event - the preamble to the Second World War and the Shoah - has had for the Jewish people and Jewish cultural production through the 20th century and into the 21st. Jewish literature journalism, letters, and music from the war have much to tell about the encounter between old traditions and new experimentations, framed by urgency, migration, and messianic hope. Many were writing against the grain of canonic literature, where subtle forms of dissidence, manifested through language, structure, sound, and thought, sought to align with the anti-fascist fight. Most contributions in this volume discuss subaltern voices from across the globe - including from Germany, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, France, and Spain - which were left under the shadow of the continuously growing corpus of world literature of the Spanish Civil War. There is also an analysis of the “Jewishness” - aesthetics as well as ideas - of the secular imaginaries of these artists and intellectuals as embedded in Jewish topics and ethos.     Abstract: Die Publikation schlüsselt das Lebenswerk des Hebraisten Elias Hutter auf und ordnet es in den historischen Kontext ein.Im späten 16. Jahrhundert wollte Hutter das Studium des Hebräischen revolutionieren. Getragen von der Idee, dass das biblische Hebräisch als göttliche Ursprache den Weg zur Einheit von Sprache und Religion aufzeigt, entwickelte er neue didaktische Methoden zur Vereinfachung des Hebräischstudiums. Am Anfang seines Wirkens steht die 1587 in Hamburg veröffentlichte „Biblia Sacra – Derekh ha-Kodesh“. In dieser Edition der Hebräischen Bibel entwickelte er ein bis heute einzigartiges Druckbild, um die Morphologie des Hebräischen zu illustrieren. Weitere Arbeiten folgten, u.a. Lexika und Polyglotten, in denen Hutter das Sprachenstudium mit seiner These von der einheitsstiftenden göttlichen Ursprache verband. Sein Werk ist somit im Grenzbereich zwischen neuzeitlicher Sprachwissenschaft und religiöser Spekulation einzuordnen. Der historische Vergleich zeigt, dass er ein Vertreter der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik ist und kein „Phantast“ seiner Zeit war.Die Publikation führt nicht nur in Hutters Werk ein, sondern bietet zudem einen Überblick über Methoden und Konzeptionen der frühneuzeitlichen christlichen Hebraistik

    Abstract: Hermann Cohen (1842–1918) was a leading figure in the Neo-Kantian philosophical movement that dominated European thought before 1918. He was also an inaugural figure in modern Jewish philosophy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book explores Cohen’s striking claim that ethics is rooted in law – a claim developed both in his philosophical ethics and his philosophy of Judaism, in particular in his writings on "love-of-neighbor," up to and including his well-known Religion of Reason. Dana Hollander proposes that neither Cohen’s systematic philosophy nor his "Jewish" philosophy should be seen as the dominant framework for his oeuvre as a whole, but that his understanding of key philosophical questions takes shape in the passages between both corpuses, a trait that could be seen as paradigmatic for modern Jewish philosophy. Ethics Out of Law taps into one of the prime topics of current interest in the field of Jewish philosophy: the nature of Jewish political existence and the changing configurations of "law" that this entails

    Abstract: The present volume contains thirteen articles based on work presented at the “XX. Century Conference: If This Is A Woman” at Comenius University Bratislava in January 2019. The conference was organized against anti-gender narratives and related attacks on academic freedom and women’s rights currently all too prevalent in East-Central Europe. The papers presented at the conference and in this volume focus, to a significant extent, on this region. They touch upon numerous points concerning gendered experiences of World War II and the Holocaust. By purposely emphasizing the female experience in the title, we encourage to fill the lacunae that still, four decades after the enrichment of Holocaust studies with a gendered lens, exist when it comes to female experiences

    Abstract: "Examining connections between Jewish American authors and Jewish authors elsewhere in America, Europe, and Israel, this book explores a concept of authorial affiliation that emphasizes how writers intentionally highlight their connections with other writers. Starting with Philip Roth as a catalyst, David Hadar reveals a larger network of authors involved in formations of Jewish American literary identity, including among others Cynthia Ozick, Saul Bellow, Nicole Krauss, and Nathan Englander. Whether it's incorporating other writers into fictional work as characters, interviewing them, publishing critical essays about them, or invoking them in paratext or publicity, writers use a variety of methods to forge public personas, craft their own identities as artists, and infuse their art with meaningful cultural associations.
