Abstract:
A lecture presented at the conference "National Identity, Assimilation and Antisemitism in England and in France in the 19th and 20th Centuries", Haifa University, May 1997. Discusses the presentation of post-emancipation Jewish assimilated and converted figures in France's historical novels: "L'orme du mail" ["The Elm-Tree on the Mall"], "Le mannequine d'osier" ["The Wicker-Work Woman"], "Monsieur Bergeret à Paris", and "Anneu d'améthyste" ["The Amethyst Ring"], which comprise his series "L'Histoire Contemporaine", published between 1896-1901. Reflects on whether France, a Dreyfusard, was influenced in his derogatory presentation of the Jewish assimilated figures by antisemitic attitudes originating in the Dreyfus Affair.
