Abstract:
The election of Pope Paul IV in 1555 brought about a change in the status of the small community of the Conversos in Ancona, Italy. The Pope related to them as "apostates" and initiated persecution of them - confiscations of goods, arrests, tortures and trials. In 1556, 26 Conversos were burned at the stake.
