Abstract: Exhibition “#Heritage” set up in National museum in Krakow represents the model with which the new Polish goverment is trying to deal with contemporary socialissues, history and collective memory and particulary when it comes to interpretation of the Polish role in the Holocuast. Following the example of Museum ofHistory of Polish Jews, POLIN in Warsaw one can observe the oposite side, criticalyet expanded notion of relationship between Poles and Jews in Poland during morethen thousand years of joint history. Holocaust is not defi ning moment in thatrelationship, even though it is the most important and tragic. Polish goverment, inthe attempts to make clear that death camps in Poland were not Polish, but German, adopted the controversal amandment 55a which might seriously limit thefreedom of speech and further research about Holocaust. Representing its powersin changing the operations and even appearance of World War Two museum inGdansk in the direction of being more Polish and patriotic and less universal, Polish goverment actually represented its intention of revriting history interpretationsand changing narratives of past introducing “#” model of oppeness with no realreadiness for social dialogue and constructive criticisms.

Abstract: Th is paper is aimed at analysing the topos of the Old Fairground in Belgrade as aspace – which has had very diverse functions and purposes since the period between the two World Wars until today. It was a space where Jews, Serbs and Romasuff ered during the World War II, and which to this day it has not become a meaningful lieux de memoire (Nora 1998). In this sense, today’s attempts and ideas tomake this space a memorial complex aim to make the (in)visible past a universalmemory of suff ering and trauma, a reminder for future times. Th e important assumptions of this process and transformation are the care for the way of the physical arrangement and infrastructure regulation of the area of the Old Fairground, the system of jurisdiction and management; legal frameworks that would regulateall aspects and program activities that will take place in this area, and most importantly: a commemorative aspect and a lasting memory of the victims of genocide, occupation and war crimes. In theory, this work sublimates the beginnings of theculture of memory and the culture of oblivion, linking them to the physical spaceas a place of remembrance. Th e selected remembrance location Old Fairground isa place that is characterized by controversial functional use since 1937 when it wasopened as an exhibition and presentation space, a symbol of modernization andprogress of the Yugoslav society of the time, only to become a camp for Jews, andthen a collecting post during the Second World War – a place of trauma and suff ering. In the post-war period, this location has, in light of politicization, changed itspurpose constantly, as almost none in Yugoslavia or Serbia, but it was never legitimized to the full extent, which would imply legal support. Relying on the conceptof remembrance, the paper analyses the solutions for physical marking, restorationand preservation of this space as a prerequisite necessary for it to become a memorial and to preserve memories.
