Abstract: Biographical note: Moshe Bar-Asher, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel; Aaron Koller, Yeshiva University, New York, USA.
Abstract: This volume collects studies of the classical Hebrew language by one of the foremost scholars of this language in our time. Moshe Bar-Asher has published dozens of studies of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic, spanning nearly three thousand years of texts and dialects. Very few of his penetrating studies have been available in any European language, however. This volume presents 24 of them in English, dealing with the language of the Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Rabbinic Literature.

Abstract: What is the use of a Targum in a cultural setting where Aramaic is not a common language anymore? And why would Christians be interested in a typically Jewish text in an otherwise anti-Jewish milieu? These and related questions have served as guides for Alberdina Houtman, Eveline van Staalduine-Sulman and Hans-Martin Kirn in bringing together the articles for the present book, which consists of three parts: 1. Uses and Functions of Targum in Europe; 2. Editing Targums and their Latin Translations; 3. Targums and Christianity. A number of the articles deal with the codicological and paratextual aspects of the relevant manuscripts and editions as witnesses of their cultural historical situations. The intended readership includes specialists in Targum, Jewish and medieval studies, (church) historians, codicologists and (Christian) theologians

Abstract: Ancient texts, once written by hand on parchment and papyrus, are now increasingly discoverable online in newly digitized editions, and their readers now work online as well as in traditional libraries. So what does this mean for how scholars may now engage with these texts, and for how the disciplines of biblical, Jewish and Christian studies might develop? These are the questions that contributors to this volume address. Subjects discussed include textual criticism, palaeography, philology, the nature of ancient monotheism, and how new tools and resources such as blogs, wikis, databases and digital publications may transform the ways in which contemporary scholars engage with historical sources. Contributors attest to the emergence of a conscious recognition of something new in the way that we may now study ancient writings, and the possibilities that this new awareness raises

Abstract: In discoursing on music, three early modern Jewish scholars stand out for their originality. The first is Judah Moscato, who, as chief rabbi in Mantua, preached sermons, one of them on music: there Moscato presents music as a cosmic and spiritual phenomenon. The second scholar is Leon Modena, the foremost Jewish intellectual in early seventeenth-century Venice. Modena deals with music in two responsa to questions put to him for rabbinical adjudication, one of them an examination of biblical and rabbinical sources on the legitimacy of performing art music in the synagogue. Abraham Portaleone, the third scholar, treated music in a massive disquisition on the Ancient Temple and its ritual, describing it as an art correlating with contemporary Italian music. The introduction surveys the development of Hebrew art music from the Bible through the Talmud and rabbinical writings until the early modern era. The epilogue defines the special contribution of Hebrew scholars to early modern theory

Abstract: "The Hebrew language may be divided into the biblical, Mishnaic, Medieval, and Modern periods. Biblical Hebrew has its own distinct linguistic profile, exhibiting a diversity of styles and linguistic traditions extending over some one thousand years as well as tangible diachronic developments that may serve as chronological milestones in tracing the linguistic history of Biblical Hebrew. Unlike standard dictionaries, whose scope and extent are dictated by the contents of the biblical concordance, this lexicon includes only 80 lexical entries, chosen specifically for a diachronic investigation of late biblical Hebrew. Selected primarily to illustrate the fifth-century 'watershed' separating classical from post-classical biblical Hebrew, emphasis is placed on 'linguistic contrasts' illuminated by a rich collection of examples contrasting classical biblical Hebrew with late biblical Hebrew, biblical Hebrew with Rabbinic Hebrew, and Hebrew with Aramaic"-- Provided by the publisher

Abstract: "Over the past 45 years Professor Pieter W. van der Horst contributed extensively to the study of ancient Judaism and early Christianity. The 24 papers in this volume, written since his early retirement in 2006, cover a wide range of topics, all of them concerning the religious world of Judaism and Christianity in the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine era. They reflect his research interests in Jewish epigraphy, Jewish interpretation of the Bible, Jewish prayer culture, the diaspora in Asia Minor, exegetical problems in the writings of Philo and Josephus, Samaritan history, texts from ancient Christianity which have received little attention (the poems of Cyrus of Panopolis, the Doctrina Jacobi nuper baptizati, the Letter of Mara bar Sarapion), and miscellanea such as the pagan myth of Jewish cannibalism, the meaning of the Greek expression 'without God,' the religious significance of sneezing in pagan antiquity, and the variety of stories about pious long-sleepers in the ancient world (pagan, Jewish, Christian)"--Provided by the publisher

Abstract: In Jewish Youth around the World 1990-2010: Social Identity and Values , Erik Cohen offers a rich and multi-faceted picture of Jewish adolescents and young adults today. Based on numerous empirical studies conducted by the author over the course of two decades among various populations in Israel and every major Diaspora country, it considers a range of issues, including: demographics and migration patterns, Jewish identity, involvement in the Jewish community, leisure time activities, values, relationship to Israel and to the global Jewish collective. In-depth analysis of the data uncovers similarities and differences of various sub-populations by nationality, level of religiosity, age, gender and more. The book is pioneering in its comparative approach to Jewish youth around the world. This book is also available in paperback

Abstract: In Jewish-Muslim Relations and Migration from Yemen to Palestine in the Late Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries Ari Ariel analyzes the impact of local, regional and international events on ethnic and religious relations in Yemen and Yemeni Jewish migration patterns. Previous research has dealt with single episodes of Yemenite migration during limited spans of time. Ariel, instead, provides a broad sweep of the migratory flows over the 70 year time span during which most of Yemen’s Jews moved to Palestine and then Israel. He successfully avoids the polemic nature of much of the literature on Middle Eastern Jewry by focusing on the social, economic and political transformations that provoked and then sustained this migration

Abstract: During the later Middle Ages (twelfth to fifteenth centuries), the study of chronology, astronomy, and scriptural exegesis among Christian scholars gave rise to Latin treatises that dealt specifically with the Jewish calendar and its adaptation to Christian purposes. In Medieval Latin Christian Texts on the Jewish Calendar C. Philipp E. Nothaft offers the first assessment of this phenomenon in the form of critical editions, English translations, and in-depth studies of five key texts, which together shed fascinating new light on the avenues of intellectual exchange between medieval Jews and Christians

Abstract: In the framework of a larger research project into ‘New Perspectives on Paul and the Jews’, eight scholars from Europe, Israel, and North America join forces in querying Paul’s relationship to Jews and Judaism. The sample text selected for this inquiry is the Second Letter to the Corinthians, a document particularly suited for this purpose as it reflects violent clashes between Paul and rivalling Jews and Jewish Christians. While the first three articles address more general literary and historical questions, the following five present in-depth case studies of much-studied passages from the letter and the underlying issues. An introductory essay queries how in the case at hand we can gain an adequate understanding of Paul’s theology while fully respecting his particular place in Judaism

Abstract: Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff, the Sol and Anne Dorff Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Rector of American Jewish University in Los Angeles, is one of today’s leading Jewish ethicists. Writing extensively on the intersection of law, morality, science, religion, and medicine, Dorff offers an authoritative and non-Orthodox interpretation of Jewish law. As a leader in the Rabbinical Assembly’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, he has shaped the religious practices of Conservative Jews. In serving on national advisory committees and task forces, he has helped to articulate a distinctive Jewish voice on contested bioethical and biomedical issues. An analytic philosopher by training, Dorff has endorsed pluralism, arguing that Jewishness best flourishes in the context of American pluralism, and he has worked closely with non-Jews to advance religious pluralism in America

Abstract: Eugene B. Borowitz is Sigmund L. Falk Distinguished Professor of Education and Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College in New York. A rabbi, teacher of rabbis, and a theologian, Borowitz has been an important spokesperson for non-Orthodox forms of Judaism, Reform Judaism in particular. Over seven decades, Borowitz has explored the centrality of God in Jewish existence, the normative force of Jewish law, the meaning of the Covenant, the distinctiveness of Jewish life, and the meaning of Jewish personhood for non-Orthodox Jews. Adopting the language of religious existentialism, he has reflected on the relational nature of human existence, on the one hand, and human self-determination on the other. Rethinking God and Ethics presents influential essays by Borowitz and explains his contribution to Jewish religious thought in the 20th century. This volume is also available in paperback . Brill mourns the death of Professor Eugene Borowitz, of blessed memory, in January 2016. The LCJP honors his valuable contribution to Jewish theology, ethics, and education

Abstract: In his literary texts, which remained mostly unpublished, Gustav Landauer (1870-1919) anticipated the linguistically skeptical ideas of his time. In new intertextual, intermedial and muted writing styles, he confronts the inadequacy of language in a creative manner. Through his entanglements with works of German literature and music, the Jewish author Landauer wrote himself into German culture. The presentation and analysis of all literary texts provides an important contribution to both research on Landauer and the study of cultural and social functions of intermediality and intertextuality.
Abstract: In seinen größtenteils unveröffentlichten literarischen Texten nimmt Gustav Landauer (1870?1919) sprachskeptische Gedanken seiner Zeit voraus.

Abstract: Does the design of the Tabernacle in the wilderness correspond to God’s blueprint of Creation? The Christian Topography, a sixth-century Byzantine Christian work, presents such a cosmology. Its theory is based on the “pattern” revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai when he was told to build the Tabernacle and its implements “after their pattern, which is being shown thee on the Mount.” (Exod. 25: 40). The book demonstrates, through texts and images, the motifs that link the Tabernacle and Creation. It traces the long chain of transmission that connects the Jewish and Christian traditions from Syria and ancient Israel to France and Spain from the first through the fourteenth century, revealing new models of interaction between Judaism and Christianity

Abstract: The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) has become a leader in the dialogue between Jews and Catholics as was manifested in the role that the Jesuit Cardinal Augustin Bea played in the adoption by the Second Vatican Council of Nostra Aetate, the charter for that new relationship. Still the encounters between Jesuits and Jews were often characterized by animosity and this historical record made them a tragic couple, related but estranged. This volume is the first examination of the complex interactions between Jesuits and Jews from the early modern period in Europe and Asia through the twentieth century where special attention is focused on the historical context of the Holocaust

Abstract: The volume explores the stone carved shrines for the scrolls of the Mosaic Law from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-seventeenth century synagogues in the former Polish Kingdom. Created on the margin of mainstream art and at a crossroad of diverse cultures, artistic traditions, aesthetic attitudes and languages, these indoor architectural structures have hitherto not been the subject of a monographic study. Revisiting and integrating multiple sources, the author re-evaluates the relationship of the Jewish culture in Renaissance Poland with the medieval Jewish heritage, sepulchral art of the Polish court and nobles, and earlier adaptations of the Christian revival of classical antiquity by Italian Jews. The book uncovers the evolution of artistic patronage, aesthetics, expressions of identities, and emerging visions among a religious minority on the cusp of the modern age

Abstract: In Reading the Rabbis Eva De Visscher examines the Hebrew scholarship of Englishman Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194). Chiefly known as the loyal secretary and hagiographer of Archbishop Thomas Becket and enemy of Henry II, he appears here as an outstanding Hebraist whose linguistic proficiency and engagement with Rabbinic sources, including contemporary teachers, were unique for a northern-European Christian of his time. Two commentaries on the Psalms by Herbert form the focus of scrutiny. In demonstrating influence from Jewish and Christian texts such as Rashi, Hebrew-French glossaries, Hebrew-Latin Psalters, and Victorine scholarship, De Visscher situates Herbert within the context of an increased interest in the revision of Jerome's Latin Bible and literal exegesis, and a heightened Christian awareness of Jewish 'other-ness'

Abstract: In The Institution of the Hasmonean High Priesthood , Vasile Babota offers an interdisciplinary study of the establishment of the Hasmonean priests as high priests in Jerusalem, from their revolt in 167 down to 140. The Hasmonean high priests exercised both religious and civil powers until 37 B.C.E. and some acted also as kings. Previous studies looked at them mainly from a biblical /Jewish perspective. Vasile Babota persuasively argues that the first high priests Jonathan and Simon acted as Hellenistic high priestly rulers. This conclusion is based on an analysis of the activity of the high priests Jonathan and Simon on internal and external levels, a comparison with earlier Jewish high priests, and a comparison with Hellenistic (Seleucid and Ptolemaic) high priests

Abstract: This volume features the thought and writings of Jonathan Sacks, one of today’s leading Jewish public thinkers. It brings together an intellectual portrait, four of his most original and influential philosophical essays, and an interview with him. This volume showcases the work of Sacks, a philosopher who seeks to confront and offer solutions to the numerous problems besetting Judaism and its confrontation with modernity. In addition, the reader will also encounter an important social philosopher and proponent of interfaith dialogue, who articulates how it is possible to cultivate a culture of civility based on the twin notions of the dignity of difference and the ethic of responsibility. Jonathan Sacks has been Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from September 1991 to September 2013 and a member of the House of Lords since 2009

Abstract: The two Jewish works that are the subject of this volume, 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch , were written around the turn of the first century CE in the aftermath of the Roman destruction of the Second Temple. Both texts are apocalypses, and both occupy an important place in early Jewish literature and thought: they were composed right after the Second Temple period, as Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity began to emerge. The twenty essays in this volume were first presented and discussed at the Sixth Enoch Seminar at the Villa Cagnola at Gazzada, near Milan, Italy, on June 26-30, 2011. Together they reflect the lively debate about 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch among the most distinguished specialists in the field. The Contributors are: Gabriele Boccaccini; Daniel Boyarin; John J. Abstract: This volume features Eliezer Schweid’s philosophy of Judaism for a secular age. The volume brings together four of Schweid’s most original and influential philosophical essays and an interview with him that together express his fundamental outlook: the faith of a secular Jew, freely choosing loyalty to his or her national culture and drawing on Jewish heritage to inform how to act responsibly toward one’s neighbor, one’s people, the world, and God. The themes span the gamut of Schweid’s life work: the existential loneliness of the modern Jew; Judaism as a culture; faith in light of the Holocaust; and appreciation for secular humanism with awareness of its shortcomings, given the enduring legacy of the Jewish biblical heritage

Abstract: Main description: Black Jews in Africa and the Americas tells the fascinating story of how the Ashanti, Tutsi, Igbo, Zulu, Beta Israel, Maasai, and many other African peoples came to think of themselves as descendants of the ancient tribes of Israel. Pursuing medieval and modern European race narratives over a millennium in which not only were Jews cast as black but black Africans were cast as Jews, Tudor Parfitt reveals a complex history of the interaction between religious and racial labels and their political uses. For centuries, colonialists, travelers, and missionaries, in an attempt to explain and understand the strange people they encountered on the colonial frontier, labeled an astonishing array of African tribes, languages, and cultures as Hebrew, Jewish, or Israelite. Africans themselves came to adopt these identities as their own, invoking their shared histories of oppression, imagined blood-lines, and common traditional practices as proof of a racial relationship to Jews. Beginning in the post-slavery era, contacts between black Jews in America and their counterparts in Africa created powerful and ever-growing networks of black Jews who struggled against racism and colonialism. A community whose claims are denied by many, black Jews have developed a strong sense of who they are as a unique people. In Parfitt’s telling, forces of prejudice and the desire for new racial, redemptive identities converge, illuminating Jewish and black history alike in novel and unexplored ways.

Abstract: After 1933, New York City gave shelter to many leading German and German-Jewish intellectuals. Stripped of their German citizenship by the Nazi-regime, these public figures either stayed in the New York area or moved on to California and other places. This compendium, adopting the title of a famous volume published by Klaus and Erika Mann in 1939, explores the impact the US, and NYC in particular, had on these authors as well as the influence they in turn exerted on US intellectual life. Moreover, it addresses the transformations that took place in the exiled intellectuals’ thinking when it was translated into another language and addressed to an American audience. Among the individuals presented in this volume, are such prominent names as T.W. Adorno, H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, E. Bloch, B. Brecht, S. Kracauer, the Mann family, S. Morgenstern, and E. Panofsky. The authors of the essays in this compendium were free to choose the angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) deemed best to illuminate the given intellectual’s work. Acclaimed NYC photographer Fred Stein, a German-Jewish refugee from Dresden, produced numerous portraits of exiled intellectuals and artists. A selection of these compelling portraits is reproduced in this book for the first time

Abstract: Because of the scandals surrounding his writings Isaac La Peyrère (1596-1676) has largely been interpreted either as a crypto-Jew or as an early atheist. The present study investigates him and his work not only in terms of theological history but, for the first time, within the context of the social practices of the European Republic of Letters. La Peyrère's criticism of the bible and his striking interest in the Jews can now be newly interpreted in relation to spiritual reading of St Paul and La Peyrière's relationship to his patron, Prince Condé

Abstract: Europe is in the midst of a rapid political and economic unification. What does this mean for the Jewish minority – numbering less than 2 million people and still suffering from the aftermath of the Shoah? Will the Jewish communities participate in Europe’s bold venture without risking total assimilation? Are they vibrant enough to form a new Jewish center alongside Israel and the American Jewish community, or are they hopelessly divided and on a “Road to Nowhere”? Different perspectives are predicted, relating to demographical, cultural and sociological aspects. This volume provides exciting, thorough and controversial answers by renowned scholars from Europe, Israel, North- and Latin America – many of them also committed to local Jewish community building. Abstract: The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren covers the Jewish contribution to German-speaking cultural history in some 1,300 biographical-bibliographic articles. Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research.

Abstract: Dieser Band besteht aus 14 Beiträgen.
Abstract: This volume is comprised of 14 contributions, which are revised and expanded versions of lectures held at an international conference on Stefan Zweig that took place in Israel in 2004. The essays focus on Zweig's biographical writings (for example Erasmus and Fouché), as well as on several aspects of his literary works that have been neglected since the revival of academic studies of his writings and career commenced some 25 years ago. These include: Zweig's conception of the daemonic, Zweig and Christianity, the discourse of love in his writings, Zweig as an Austrian eulogist, his understanding of theater, etc. Contributors from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, and Israel bring refreshingly diverse perspectives and new concerns to this scholarly project.

Abstract: The study examines Jewish and judaeophobic language concepts and conflicts between 1893 and 1933. The author is primarily concerned with reconstructing German Jews’ attitudes to the German language. The sources used include public debates on the assessment of language as they were conducted in prominent Jewish journals around 1900. Conversely, Kremer also examines the specific linguistic, cultural and racial polemics of the contemporary agitation directed against the Jews. His discreetly and tactfully written study contributes to the process of reappraising German-Jewish relations in attitudes to the German language.

Abstract: This is a study of one of the few prose texts by an author much better known for his poetry. It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Instead of taking the conventional course and treating this remark as a reference to Adorno, the author examines the poetological implications behind it. Though hermetic at first glance, the text yields up a surprising number of its apparent enigmas when subjected to close reading, poetological analysis, intertextual comparison with texts by Adorno, and reference to letters recently published for the first time.
Abstract: Review text: "S[iebert]'s insistance on the primacy of the text, and the reading of it [...], provides an eloquent and convincing case against purely autobiographically informed literary investigation. The volume concludes with some provocative suggestions for further research."In: The year's work in modern language studies 69/2009 "Die Studie wird künftig als Standardwerk zu Celans wichtigstem Erzähltext gelten dürfen."Wolfgang Emmerich in: Germanistik, Band 48/Heft 3-4 (2007)

Abstract: The rediscovery of the works of the Galician writer Soma Morgenstern only took place after his death. They are marked by the quest for identity embarked on by Jewish intellectuals in the 20th century. Exiled in America after the Shoah, Morgenstern turned away from Christian Europe, attributing to it the religious blame for the Holocaust. "Die Blutsäule" is, however, written in idiosyncratic German, with many reminiscences of the language of the Bible. Given that this was also the language of the 'hated' perpetrators of the Holocaust, the complexion of the novel is intricate indeed. The study reconstructs its religious, historical, and literary background.
- The rediscovery of the works of the Galician writer Soma Morgenstern only took place after his death.
Abstract: The 19th century German-Jewish historical novel was born of the need to supply readers with popular novels, a novelty in Jewish literature. Through the back door it provided a chance to update images of Jews and Judaism and rewrite Jewish history according to the ideological needs of the main participants in the struggle out of the Ghetto. Rabbis, teachers and community leaders wrote novels that first appeared in the main papers, the "AZJ" and "Der Israelit". The novels enjoyed great popularity, especially among youth. Though they rejected any national aspect of Jewish history, the very choice of themes and heroes enhanced national pride. They were translated/adapted into Hebrew and played a major role in the national awakening in Eastern Europe and in Israel.

Abstract: In response to the onset of 'modernism' around 1900 we find in Vienna the emergence of the image of that city as the epitome of Gemütlichkeit and coziness. With its programmatic reference to the past (Alt-Wien) this image was the ideal counterpoint to the alarming social and cultural upheavals ravaging the metropolis at that point in time. This image was primarily disseminated and differentiated by popular musical theatre, notably its most important genre, the operetta. The present essay on the topography of popular musical theatre in Vienna points up the connections between theatrical entertainment and the urban setting.
Abstract: Review text: "Daß die Geschichte des Wiener Unterhaltungstheaters nicht ohne die Berücksichtigung jüdischer Protagonisten geschrieben werden kann, beweist diese Studie eindrücklich."Daniel Jütte in: PaRDeS 13/2007 "...this outstanding addition to the distinguished 'Theatron' series is the most innovative contribution to Viennese theatre history to have appeared in print for half a century." Abstract: Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit der jüdischen Identität der österreichischen Dichter und Denker Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus und Theodor Herzl im Kulturkontext und in der Kulturkrise des österreichischen Fin de Siècle.
Abstract: This volume examines the Jewish identity of the Austrian writers and thinkers Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus, and Theodor Herzl in the cultural context of the Austrian fin de siècle and the cultural crisis that went with it. All of them drew more or less consciously on a rich Jewish heritage, which they either turned away from (Kraus, Zweig) or sought a new rapprochement with (Beer-Hofmann, Herzl). The dynamic tensions resulting from the interplay between the absorption of Austrian culture, on the one hand, and the imprint of century-old Jewish traditions and values on the other find their expression in the different responses of these Austrian-Jewish personalities to the culture and cultural crisis of the fin de siècle. As such they can be considered paradigmatic for the situation of all European Jews.

Jahrhundert.
Abstract: The language used in the Yiddish Bible translation tradition is extremely well documented both by manuscripts (as of about 1400) and by printed versions (as of about 1535). In the real-life context, its most salient usage is located in the cheyder, the Jewish elementary school. The contribution of this translation idiom to the development of standard Yiddish has been hugely underrated. The present study (a) draws upon the first Hebrew-Yiddish Bible concordance (around 1535) to identify as many elements of cheyder language as possible that ran counter to the development of standard German, (b) explains them with reference to the original Hebrew text, (c) traces their presence in Bible glossaries and translations to establish them as consistent elements in the tradition, and (d) documents their incorporation into ordinary Yiddish all the way up to standard Yiddish. The study is based on the evaluation of some 120 texts from the late 14th to the 18th century.

Abstract: After 1933, on a scale hitherto largely unreflected in literary research, German exiles engaged with the phenomenon of National Socialist anti-Semitism. This engagement ranged from the collection of documents to the 'dialectics of enlightenment'. The study reconstructs this historical discourse with special reference to the way it is reflected in the Zeitstück genre (topical dramas on pressing contemporary issues). In the process it inquires into the extent to which the dramatic genre imposes formal aesthetic constraints that involve a restriction of theoretical interest in anti-Semitism to a small number of constantly recurring motifs.

Abstract: In the eight decades after the 1830s, ghetto literature became the most important genre in the development of Jewish literature in German. In its first section, this documentation outlines the reception accorded to the genre up to the early 1930s with reference to and commentaries on over 600 sources. The second section facilitates access to the primary texts by providing an annotated bibliography, brief biographies of the just under 100 mostly Jewish authors of ghetto literature, and indexes of names and subject matter.
Abstract: Seit den dreißiger Jahren des 19.

Abstract: Leopold Jessner (1878-1945) was the first German director to display an explicit commitment to political theatre. As of 1919 he was in charge of the biggest theatre in the Weimar Republic, the Staatstheater Berlin. The Jewish socialist put paid to the Wilhelmine artistic spirit prevalent at the time and gave the democratic epoch a new profile. Among conservatives this aroused greater enmity than they felt for many of the politicians taking a similar stance. Jessner's specific use of the stage and his terse, objective style of direction initiated the development of German Regietheater even before the arrival of Piscator and Brecht. Jessner's work also reflects the division of the Republic. His resignation in 1930 was a symptomatic case of the ousting of Jews from German cultural life.

Abstract: Until about 150 years ago, West Yiddish was the language used by Jews in Germany for their everyday affairs. It stood in close and intensive contact with the dialects of the Christian population. These dialects absorbed numerous loan-words from Yiddish, partly via the mediation of special languages like Rotwelsch ('thieves' Latin'). The dictionary is based on the responses of 108 informants and on written sources from the Bavarian region of Central Franconia. The references are studied for their etymology, semantics, morphology and phonology. Lexicological and word-geographical indications from all over the German-speaking territory are drawn upon to study their dissemination both in Yiddish and in various special languages.

Abstract: In the first third of the 20th century, Georg Hermann (1871-1943) was an internationally well-known and popular author. His gentle irony and the bitter-sweet cachet of his atmospheric descriptions have remained uniquely distinctive. Both in his novels and in his political and aesthetic writings, he documents the slow artistic and intellectual change that took place in the first half of the 20th century. The articles in this volume examine Hermann's achievement as a novelist, a chronicler of life in Berlin, a critic of art and literature, and an observer of the German-Jewish response to life.

Abstract: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

Abstract: This book looks at the Franco-Jewish novel in the first few decades after the Second World War. Beginning with Elie Wiesel's autobiographical narrative »La Nuit« (1958) there is discussion of a total of seven novels and stories by Ashkenazi and Sephardi writers. Central to the study's concerns is an inquiry into the existence of a specifically Jewish sub-genre within the overall range of the modern French novel.

Abstract: Thomas Mann's (1875-1955) engagement with contemporary Jews and his epic portrayals of them trace the ups and downs of history and reveal them as such. In his work, the Jews are given a key role in the debates of the 20th century. From Naphta and Krokowski in »The Magic Mountain« and Joseph and Moses there are connecting links and analogies between Germans and Jews, all the way up to Fitelberg and Breisacher in »Doctor Faustus«. The chronological treatment foregrounds both continuity and change in Mann's views, the mixture of fascination and prejudice they reveal, and their ongoing differentiation and refinement. The study (first published in French in 1995) deepens our awareness of the structural unity of Mann's oeuvre and makes a contribution to research on mentalities.

Abstract: This first annotated and variously indexed edition of 14th-16th century Yiddish glosses on the »Book of Job« provides scholars working on the history of the German language and in the field of Yiddish (and Jewish) studies with a vast fund of material (15,000 word and sentence glosses from 11 manuscripts and printed versions) presented here in the context of its transmission. As such, it is a stimulating source for all kinds of different studies.

Abstract: The volume is a contribution to the history of the Jews in medieval Europe and seeks to achieve more precise purchase on this complex culture-historical process by concentrating on one specific element of it. The articles analyze literary testimonies in German from the 12th to the 17th centuries written from a Christian perspective and containing images of Jews, their religion, their mentality, and recommendations for dealings between Christians and Jews. At the same time, the preconditions and the impact of these literary constructs are discussed against the backdrop of relevant research from the fields of theology and social history.

Abstract: Jewish literature blossomed in Germany during the years 1933 to 1938. It was tolerated by the National Socialists and served German Jews as a means of self-ascertion and frequently also provided guidelines. With reference to narrative literature, the study provides both a general outline and an analysis of individual works, thus delineating more clearly a type of literary life that both reflected the range and scope of inner-Jewish discussion and asserted its resistance to the humiliating constraints imposed by the non-Jewish environment

Abstract: For a long time Moses Mendelssohn's (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« was one of the neglected works of the German Enlightenment period. Only in recent years has it started to be given the critical attention it merits, albeit almost exclusively from the perspective of the history of emancipation and of minorities. The present study examines the work in terms of the history of ideas and places it in the context of contemporaneous European thought, demonstrating that in it Mendelssohn presents a highly innovative angle on the issue of human rights and the possibility of pluralistic societies.

Abstract: This book observes and critiques controversies on the genesis and the character of Israeli Hebrew. Did it emerge through revival? Did Ben-Yehuda play a role in it? Is Hebrew a normal language now? The hegemonic ideology of the revival of Hebrew is shown to have been harmonious with various Zionist streams, as well as with its rival, Canaanism. The effects of revivalism are evaluated, and an argument is made in favor of non-revivalist alternatives in linguistics and in language education.

Abstract: This volume contains 105 transcripts dealing with language and supplements Phonai volume 42 (= Part I) which contains 165 excerpts from interviews with German-speaking Jewish emigrants to Palestine/Israel largely on biographical subjects. The CD enclosed contains 41 of these excerpts and conveys an acoustic impression of the high proficiency and fluency of the speakers, all between the age of 60 and 100. The subsequent linguistic analysis divides into 10 subsections examining the sociolinguistic backgrounds of the cultivated 'educated' German displayed by the speakers and its grammatical and stylistic characteristics. Together the two volumes document and describe a variety of German distinguished first of all by its striking orientation to written and literary standards and models, and secondly by occasional lexical enrichments from the Hebrew-speaking world surrounding the speakers. This historically unique variety of German is doomed to disappear with the last generation of emigrants.
