    Abstract: Aron Menczer (1917-1943) was an active member of the Zionist youth movement Gordonya. After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March 1938, he became deeply involved in the efforts of the Youth Aliyah to enable Jewish youngsters to emigrate from Austria to Palestine. Menczer postponed his own Aliyah in order to continue to work for the exit of Jewish youth from Nazi Austria, and became in September 1939 the director of the Youth Aliyah in Vienna. His absolute devotion to the emigration efforts and to the educational work with the remaining Jewish youngsters in Vienna made him their recognized leader. Menczer was deported to Ghetto Theresienstadt in September 1942, where he continued his educational work. In October 1943 he was transported to Birkenau with a group of 1196 children, who were brought to Theresienstadt from Bialistok, and with 52 adults who, like him, volunteered to take care of them. They were all murdered there. The personality and deeds of Aron Menczer are the center of the book. A couple of chapters deal with the historical background: the Nazi policy of pressuring Jews to exit the country, prior to the phase of deportation and murder, and the efforts by the Youth Aliyah and other organizations to rescue them. The book is based on the original German version edited by Joanna Nittenberg und Benjamin Kaufmann. Two new parts were added to the current Hebrew edition. One is a comprehensive introduction which examines Menczer's activity in light of some general issues raised in the research literature. The other part consists of archival sources which were added to the book for additional insights

    Abstract: This book is an updated Hebrew translation of The Modulated Scream: Pain in Late Medieval Culture. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010. The subject of this book is human pain in the later middle ages (13th-15th centuries) in Western Europe. The author surveys and analyzes the ways people wrote about pain in different situations (like the difference between childbirth and toothache), and the ways people described their own pains. In a world with very few pain-killers and nothing at all to make surgery bearable, people suffered much more pain than we do today. Consequently, since they could not banish pain, they sought meanings for it. Physicians claimed that one should not try to soothe pain, since pain was an indicator of disease and as such, it was useful. Lawyers and judges claimed that the infliction of pain by torture was a tried-and-true method for eliciting true confessions from criminal suspects. Experts in Christian theology debated the nature of Christ's pain during his Crucifixion, and mystics tried to identify with it, even to feel it. The common people were exhorted by preachers to bear their illnesses with patience, since pain on earth saved them future sufferings in the afterworld. In conclusion, medieval attitudes towards pain were radically different from modern ones: while we try and conquer pain, seeing it as a challenge, people in the past, who were often in constant pain, gave reasons for suffering and adopted pain as part of their lives

Il n'est pas étonnant qu'une des contributions de ce numéro s'intitule “Liberté, vitalité, spectacle” (Sophie Brunet). Dès lors, la division du volume s'est faite d'elle-même: 1-Un homme vivant; 2-Une oeuvre vivante. Au départ, le portrait d'un homme se dessine. Dans une “interview imaginaire.” On savoure son franc-parler, non que l'on adhère à toutes ses idées - en particulier en ce qui concerne Israël - mais on admire l'aisance et la liberté totale qui anime ses propos. Le comportement professionnel du cinéaste, son comportement tout court, trouvent leur place dans cette première partie. Parfois même, l'homme est saisi dans le feu de l'action. Les grands problèmes qui occupent le coeur et la pensée d'un homme de notre temps se retrouvent dans la seconde partie du volume. Là encore, au plus près de la vie . Le cinéaste interpelle les spectateurs lorsqu'il traite de la Shoah, de l'Occuption, ou de la Résistance, de la place que ces sujets tiennent dans la mémoire d'un Français ou d'un Allemand. On s'interroge avec le cinéaste : se doit-il d'être objectif? Mais “dès le début de sa carrière, remarque Pierre Beylot, un style documentaire original fondé sur la parole de témoignage et le montage des sources dont il assume de plus en plus ostensiblement le caractère subjectif” marque son oeuvre. C'est dire aussi que souvent le regard s'attarde sur le traitement esthétique des sujets abordés. Ecoutons François Niney:“Cette remise en question de nos manières de voir et de nos dilemmes, à la fois politiques et personnels, par le jeu et le poids des mots, différencie radicalement le documentaire selon Marcel, du panel d'opinions tel que l'expose en permanence l'étal médiatique”. L'important est que son public réfléchisse. Il s'agit, selon Valérie Carré, de “mettre en mouvement la réflexion du spectateur”. Qu'attendre de l'avenir? Encore une oeuvre surprenante? Vincent Lowy, à l'écoute, note: “Boulimique de projets virtuels, l'infatigable MO junior annonce déjà les quatre titres d' […] improbables best-sellers…” [futurs romans policiers }. Il convient enfin de souligner le rôle déterminant qu'a joué Stéphane Kerber dans l'élaboration de ce numéro de Perspectives. Nos vifs remerciements vont à lui. Laissons-lui maintenant la parole

    Abstract: In his article entitled “Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness”, David Chalmers divides the study of consciousness into two parts: the easy problems and the hard problems. The easy problems are those related to neurological/functional/cognitive processes. In contrast, the hard problem is the study of consciousness which is related to the subjective experience. In recent decades brain researchers have joined the race to understand consciousness. Most of them adopt an approach according to which any advance made in the study of neurological activity is also an advance in the study of consciousness.     Abstract: Journeys of the Soul: Concepts and Imageries of Paradise in Medieval Kabbalah covers the most decisive period in the history of Jewish speculation about the Garden of Eden. At the heart of the book is a thorough analysis of the compositions written by medieval kabbalists and other esotericists dedicated to that ultimate locus of retribution. Alongside their concrete and abstract portraits of the Garden, these works discuss its relationship to the Godhead and the role it plays in personal eschatology, anthropology, and psychology. The book examines trends within the interpretive history of the biblical Paradise in medieval Jewish thought more generally, and in medieval kabbalistic literature in particular. The notion of gradations or distinct sites within the Garden of Eden is explored in light of its possible influences, and the appearance of the Garden of Eden within kabbalistic psychology is considered in light of thirteenth-century theosophical doctrines. A lengthy treatment is devoted to those works which delineate the architectonic structure of the supernal Garden and depict the visual appearance of the earthly temples (hekhalot) of the lower Garden, while mapping them onto the structurally complex interrelationships within the Godhead. Within this context, the book treats a number of textual conundrums concerning the very development of the kabbalistic canon, including the appearance of the Zohar. Throughout the book, the author also investigates scientific paradigms, legendary traditions, and theological polemics in the religious literature of the period concerning the appearance and structure of the Garden of Eden. Similar exegeses, shared traditions, and a common conceptual foundation of the eschatological Paradise are identified in the kabbalistic literature, alongside echos of the Jewish apocrypha, Rabbinic literature, and Hekhalot texts. Dr. Avishai Bar Asher has been awarded the Matanel Prize for the best book in Jewish Thought published during the years 2018-2019

    Abstract: The question of theodicy has preoccupied philosophers and theologians throughout generations. Roughly: If God is moral, how can there be evil in the world? Or: Is the existence of evil not evidence against the existence of a righteous God? This question became the greatest philosophical challenge for the believer, and the main device in the hands of atheists. The question of theodicy also raises a second-order discussion, about the nature of the challenge: Is there a logical contradiction between a moral God and the existence of evil? If not, what sort of tension is this? Can the attributes of God be thought of in a coherent manner? Does the very existence of evil give rise to the challenge, or only the existence of unnecessary evil? The present research addresses Kant's take on theodicy. It focuses mainly on two Kantian assertions that seem to disaccord with Kant's theory of freedom: 1. That evil is entrenched in mankind, and 2. That if all-inclusive moral-order is impossible, the moral-law is erroneous. The conclusion, based on close examination of Kant's argumentation, is that Kant did not exclude theodicy from rational discourse, but rather redefined the challenge enclosed in the question of theodicy

    Abstract: Die Fotografien einer großen Unbekannten - Charlotte Joël. Über Charlotte Joël (1887-1943), die Fotographin vieler berühmter Porträts, ist bis heute wenig bekannt. Bis in die dreißiger Jahre hat sie fünfundzwanzig Jahre lang ein Atelier in Charlottenburg geführt, nahe dem Berliner Bahnhof Zoo. Als Jüdin musste sie es aufgeben. Viele von denen, die vor ihrer Kamera saßen, tragen große Namen: Walter Benjamin und seine Familie etwa, Martin Buber, Marlene Dietrich, die spätere Frau Theodor W. Adornos Gretel Karplus, Karl Kraus oder Gustav Landauer. Ihre emphatischen Aufnahmen von Kindern erschienen in Zeitschriften und wurden von Postkartenverlagen herausgegeben. Doch von ihr selbst ist kein Porträt überliefert. Wer war diese Frau, die so einen bedeutenden Kundenkreis hatte? Persönliche Aufzeichnungen sind nicht bekannt. Nur in wenigen erhaltenen Briefen gibt sie etwas von sich preis. Werner Kohlert hat zusammengetragen, was über ihr Leben, ihre Arbeit und ihr jüdisches Schicksal in Erfahrung zu bringen war. Friedrich Pfäfflin hat über Jahre in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen ihre Fotografien aufgespürt und den Werkkatalog erarbeitet. Endlich bekommt Charlotte Joël die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie schon lange verdient

    Abstract: "Ein Zionist schreibt mit außergewöhnlicher Beobachtungsgabe über den Häftlingsalltag im Ungarnlager des KZ Bergen-Belsen. Jeno Kolbs in ungarischer Sprache verfasstes Tagebuch zählt zu den umfangreichsten Häftlingstagebüchern aus dem Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen. Zugleich stellt es als eines von wenigen Tagebüchern die Struktur, das Verhalten und die Zukunftserwartungen der Häftlingsgesellschaft aus einer dezidiert zionistischen Perspektive dar. Neben der Schilderung der sich stetig verschlechternden Lebensbedingungen im KZ Bergen-Belsen von Juli bis Dezember 1944 bietet es bemerkenswerte Einblicke in die unterschiedlichsten Formen der Selbstbehauptung der Häftlinge im sogenannten Ungarnlager. Hier waren fast 1700 Juden aus Ungarn interniert, die schließlich dank der Verhandlungen zwischen ungarischen Zionisten (vertreten vor allem durch Rezso Kasztner) und der SS bis Ende 1944 freigelassen wurden. Kolbs Tagebuch beschreibt auch eine der erfolgreichsten Rettungsaktionen in der Geschichte des Holocaust. Es wird - im ungarischen Original und in deutscher Übersetzung -erstmals veröffentlicht.     Abstract: Die Hebräische Bewegung in Berlin: Diaspora- und Nationskonzepte als Kulturtransfer zwischen Ost- und Westeuropa. Aus der Perspektive der zionistischen Geschichtsschreibung erscheint jegliche Ausprägung jüdischen Diasporalebens als gescheitert, zu eng ist sie verbunden mit der Schoah. Tatsächlich existierte bis zur Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten durchaus eine blühende hebräischsprachige Kultur in Berlin. Tamara Or hat diese sogenannte Hebräische Bewegung untersucht und dabei die Rolle der osteuropäischen Migrantinnen und Migranten, und der mit ihnen emigrierten Ideen, für die Ausprägung der nationalen jüdischen Kultur herausgearbeitet. Die Hebräische Bewegung, die sich Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Osteuropa formierte und die die hebräische Sprache zum zentralen Charakteristikum der jüdischen Nation erklärte, war eine transnationale soziale Bewegung. Anhand der Protagonisten, die sich als Mittler zwischen den Kulturen verstanden, arbeitet die Autorin heraus, wie ost- und westeuropäische Ideen auf dem »Marktplatz der Ideen« in Berlin zusammenflossen. Deutlich werden moderne jüdische Diasporakonzepte, transkulturelle Austauschprozesse zwischen jüdischen und nichtjüdischen Gemeinschaften und die enge Verbindung zwischen Religion und Nationalismus.

    Abstract: Die Welle an Spielfilmen, die sich seit Beginn der 2000er Jahre mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit beschäftigen, spiegelt die politisch-kulturelle Verarbeitung der deutschen Vereinigung im Jahr 1990 und deren Folgen für die Erinnerungskultur. Antonia Schmid untersucht diese für Geschichtsbilder höchst einflussreichen Spielfilme auf ihre Kollektivkonstruktionen, darunter »Der Untergang« (Oliver Hirschbiegel, D/I/A 2004) und »Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter« (Philipp Kadelbach, D 2013). Ihre ikonologische Diskursanalyse von über 40 Filmen verknüpft politik-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Ansätze mit solchen aus der Bild- und Filmwissenschaft und verbindet die Antisemitismusforschung mit der Memorialgeschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Schoah. Die Analyse zeigt, dass bestimmte Motive immer wiederkehren: Besonders das »Jüdische« dient weiterhin als Negativfolie für deutsche Identität, aber auch slawophobe und antikommunistische Ideologeme sind stark verbreitet. Die »deutschen« Identifikationsfiguren hingegen werden meist als Opfer und Helden inszeniert. So entsprechen Spektrum und Hierarchie dieser Bilder noch heute in großen Teilen jenen der nationalsozialistischen »Volksgemeinschaft«.

    Abstract: Nicht erst seit dem Fall Gurlitt gelangt mit der Restitution von NS-Raubkunst ein vermeintlich abgeschlossener Teil der Vergangenheitsaufarbeitung wieder mit Wucht in die gegenwärtige Debatte. Über Bedingungen und Modalitäten wird weiter intensiv gestritten, ohne dass dabei der Akt der Wiedergutmachung als sozial anspruchsvoller Rückgabeprozess verstanden wird. Sophie Schönberger entfaltet in ihrem Buch die These, dass dieses Zurückgeben nur als bewusste vergangenheitspolitische Maßnahme eingesetzt werden kann, die einer aktiven narrativen Einbettung auf der Seite der Zurückgebenden bedarf. Dabei geht sie vor allem der Frage nach, welche besondere Funktion gerade die Rückgabe von Kunst erfüllt, da Kunstwerke sich zwar einerseits in spezieller Weise als vergangenheitspolitische Projektionsfläche eignen, historische Wunden aber nicht nur heilen, sondern auch aufreißen können

    Abstract: Bearing Witness to the Witness examines the different methods of testimony given by trauma victims and the ways in which these can enrich or undermine the ability of the reader to witness them. Years of listening to both direct and indirect testimonies on trauma have lead Dana Amir to identify four modes of witnessing trauma: The “metaphoric mode”, the “metonymic mode,” the “excessive mode”, and the “Muselmann mode.” The author thus demonstrates the importance of testimony in understanding the nature of trauma, and therefore how to respond to trauma more generally in a clinical psychoanalytic setting. In order to follow these four modes of interaction with the traumatic memory, the various chapters of the book present a close reading of three genres of traumatic witnessing: Literary accounts by Holocaust survivors, memoirs (situated between autobiographic recollection and fiction) and 'raw' testimonies given by Holocaust survivors. Since every traumatic testimonial narrative contains a combination of all four modes with various shifts between them, it is of crucial importance to identify the singular combination of modes that characterize each traumatic narrative, focusing on the specific areas within which a shift occurs from one mode to another.     Abstract: In a brief historic moment in the nineteenth century, printing presses, publishing ventures, a periodical press, circulation networks, and a mass readership came into being all at once in the Middle East, where none had previously existed. The shift had ramifications in every sphere of the community's life. Among other outcomes, it facilitated the cultural and literary movement known as the Arab nahḍa ('awakening'). Ayalon's study offers a critical inquiry into the formative phase of that grand change in Arab societies, from 1800-1914. It explores the advent of printing and publishing, the formation of mass readership, and the creation of distribution channels, the vital and often overlooked nexus linking the former two processes.     Abstract: This book is the first attempt to review the history and the fall of the Jewish community that existed in Beit She'an from the late 19th century until the outbreak of the Arab Revolt in 1936. The story of the community, which has been almost completely forgotten by the public and academic consciousness, is based on an initial study of several public and local archives, as well as a thorough study of dozens of primary and secondary sources of various types: press clippings, academic and autobiographical sources, oral interviews and others. Beside presenting the history of the community itself, which includes the unique challenges it experienced during its fifty years of existence and the organizational and ideological processes which characterized it, the study is also a base for a better assessment and understanding of the several small Jewish communities that existed during this period in a number of Arab cities and towns: Be'er Sheva, Ramle, Nazareth, Samakh, Jericho and others. This is accomplished by comparing the events in Beit She'an to those which took place in other communities, while trying to identify the factors that led to the collapse of these communities during the Mandate period, and to the withdrawal of the Zionist movement from its substantial support to their continued existence. The book also deals with different questions of ethnic and national Jewish identity, the relations between marginal communities and the leading national institutions, and issues relating to Zionist historiography over the past century

    Abstract: Der Topos »Deutsche Arbeit« entstand Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und verknüpfte Vorstellungen von Arbeitsmoral und nationalem Charakter. Während des NS-Regimes wurde der Begriff innerhalb des Konzepts der »Volksgemeinschaft« in besonderer Weise wirkmächtig. In ihren Beiträgen gehen die Autorinnen und Autoren der Genese dieses ideologischen Selbstbildes nach. Sie untersuchen, in welcher Weise Arbeit nationalistisch aufgeladen und im Gegenzug die Ideologie des Nationalen durch den Arbeitsbegriff konturiert wurde. Ebenso wird nach dem Potenzial der Ausgrenzung gefragt, das im Antisemitismus und der Vernichtungspolitik des »Dritten Reiches« kulminierte. Der Blick auf die spezifische Radikalisierung des Begriffs durch den Nationalsozialismus führt schließlich zu der Frage, in welcher Form der Topos »Deutsche Arbeit« seit Kriegsende bis heute weiterwirkt.

    Abstract: Dem Nationalsozialismus wird aus heutiger Perspektive oft jegliche Moral abgesprochen. Geht man aber davon aus, dass moralische Werte von historischen Kontexten abhängen, stellt sich die Frage neu. Thomas Gloy führt am Beispiel der Hitler-Jugend aus, wie der Nationalsozialismus eine spezifische Moral entworfen hat: Als »gut« galt, was der Gemeinschaft diente. Nicht nur der eigene Tod sollte für den Dienst an der »Volksgemeinschaft« in Kauf genommen werden - in letzter Konsequenz ging es darum, alles »Feindliche« ohne schlechtes Gewissen zu töten. So wurde die Moralisierung zu einer Herrschaftstechnik, die die Bevölkerung zur Erreichung der Ziele des NS motivierte. Deutlich wird in dieser Untersuchung, dass die Moral der HJ nicht nur durch einen expliziten Antisemitismus geprägt, sondern auch eng mit der Kategorie Geschlecht verbunden war: Das antisemitische Gegenbild stand in enger Verbindung zu einem Entwurf der »wahren Männlichkeit«, die auf Härte, Soldatentum und Opferbereitschaft fußte.
