Kurzfassung:
Discusses Luther's writings on Judaism in the context of medieval German vernacular literature. Argues that his first work concerning Jews, "Dass Jesus Christus ein geborener Jude sei" (1523), is not friendly to Jews, as is often alleged, but demands their conversion; this is in the tradition of the Adversus Iudaeos literature. In "Von den Juden und ihren Lügen", Luther proceeds from a theological refutation of Jewish anti-Christian arguments to a warning of the Jews' harmfulness to society and the demand that their synagogues and books be burnt, usury be forbidden, and the Jews forced to do useful work. Compares quotes from this tract with parallel ones in the works of Hans Folz and Heinrich von Hessler. Concludes that it is difficult to make a distinction between anti-Judaism and antisemitism even in the Middle Ages, and that there is a continuous line from medieval Jew-hatred to that of our own days.
