Abstract:
Describes the ideology of the Evangelisch-Lutherischer Centralverein für Mission unter Israel, a union of national missionary societies founded in 1871, whose most prominent leader was Franz Delitzsch. Delitzsch and others rejected radical antisemitism and argued that Christian hatred of Jews stood in the way of their conversion. However, from the late 1870s, members of the organization increasingly accused the Jews of corrupting the German people with materialism and influence in all realms of life, even in the Church. When Delitzsch, in 1882, called on the annual assembly to pass a resolution in support of the Russian Jews, the general antagonism to this proposal caused the meeting to break up in disharmony.
