Kurzfassung:
Discusses various versions of the French medieval epic (chanson de geste) entitled "Destruction de Jérusalem" or "Vengeance de Notre Seigneur" which circulated in France in the 12th-17th centuries. In these texts, the destruction of Jerusalem (70 CE) is presented as a heroic act, and the massacre of the Jews as a legitimate act of revenge against a people held collectively guilty for the death of Jesus. Between 1505-17, the Parisian printer and librarian Gilles Hardouyn added a résumé of the "Destruction de Jérusalem" to some of his books of hours. He commissioned, as well, a series of woodcuts to illustrate the story. Around 1515, Hardouyn published his assemblage of 23 woodcuts separately, accompanied by a brief text. Describes this edition, acquired by the Bibliothèque National in 1994. Pp. 317-324 contain facsimiles of the edition.
Anmerkung:
