    DDC: 938
Abstract: Anyone involved in the study of ancient Iudaea/Palaestina and its vicinity has felt the need for a comprehensive work containing all the inscriptions in various languages found in the region. The lack of such a work was all the more regrettable, as the material concerns not only those interested in the region, but also students of a great variety of related subjects, such as the history of the ancient Near East, ancient Jewish history and early Christianity, and, of course, historians of the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. The inscriptions are presented within their specific context, and complemented by a translation and commentary; where available, the texts are accompanied by a reproduction.

Abstract: "Two major Jewish risings against Rome took place in the years following the destruction of Jerusalem - the first during Trajan's Parthian war, and the second, led by Bar Kokhba, under Hadrian's principate. The impact of these risings not only on Judaea, but also on Cyrene, Egypt, Cyprus and Mesopotamia, is shown by accounts in both ancient Jewish and non-Jewish literature. Historical evaluation has veered between regret for a pointless blood-bath and admiration for sustained resistance. William Horbury offers a new history of these risings, presenting a fresh review of sources and interpretations. Horbury takes into account more recently discovered sources, including letters and documents from fighters and refugees, and inscriptions attesting war and restoration. Horbury explores the period of Jewish war under Trajan and Hadrian not just as the end of an era, but also as a time of continuity in Jewish life and development in Jewish and Christian origins"--

Abstract: "In the wake of the conquests of Alexander the Great, the ancient world of the Bible--the ancient Near East--came under Greek rule, and in the land of Israel, time-old traditions and Greek culture met. But with the accession of King Antiochus IV, the soft power of culture was replaced with armed conflict, and soon the Jews rebelled against their imperial masters, as recorded in the Biblical books of Maccabees. Whereas most scholars have dismissed the Biblical accounts of religious persecution and cultural clash, Sylvie Honigman combines subtle literary analysis with deep historical insight to show how their testimony can be reconciled with modern historical analysis by learning to converse with the biblical authors, so to speak, in their own language to understand the way they described their own experiences. Honigman contents that their stories are not mere fantasies but genuine attempts to cope with the massacre that followed the rebellion by giving it new meaning. This reading also discloses fresh political and economic factors"--

Abstract: The aim of this book is to show how architecture can illuminate the functions of religious assemblies of various kinds in ancient society. The architecture of ancient religious spaces has the potential to offer a deeper understanding of the religious groups who used the spaces and the activities they performed there. However, the large corpus of recent scholarship has for the most part overlooked architecture. This book investigates the spatial and architectural settings of mystery cults and religious assemblies from the eighth century bc to the fourth century ad and shows how architecture can illuminate the contents and societal functions of ancient religions. It examines deities whose cults included mysteries and/or were served by religious associations in the ancient world. Chapters treat the old Greek mystery cults of Demeter in Eleusis and the Great Gods in Samothrace as well as those of Dionysos, and the 'foreign' deities Isis/Serapis, Cybele/Attis, and Mithras. The book also treats religions and cults that did not include mysteries but were served by special religious groups, such as those belonging to the Syrio-Phoenician gods, the Jewish god in the diaspora, and the Christian god. The last section of the book combines the typological results from the first section on architecture with the presentation of the cultic functions of religious groups in the second section. This comparative analysis seeks to understand the social and spatial context for the activities of cults with a main focus on the Hellenistic and Roman periods, in particular through distinguishing the differences and similarities in the use of specific room-types.

Abstract: "This is the most recent collective contribution of a group of biblical scholars and archaeologists who are engaged in an ongoing debate about the nature of family and household religion in ancient Israel and its environment. It is intended to complement the volume Household and Family Religion in Antiquity, edited by John Bodel and Saul M. Olyan (Bodel and Olyan 2008), which grew out of a conference held at Brown University in 2005 on household and family religion in the ancient Mediterranean world, with an emphasis on cross-cultural comparison. After the conference at Brown, there was a session held at the meeting of the European Association of Biblical Studies in Budapest in 2006 in which the focus was narrowed to the gender dimensions of Israelite family/household religion. Two more sessions focusing on the Israelite house as a locus of family religion took place at the European Association of Biblical Studies meeting in Vienna in 2007. A fourth meeting at Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universitaet Muenster in April 2009 emphasized theoretical and methodological challenges facing scholars of household and family religion (e.g., the conceptualization of family/household religion, the problem of identifying pertinent artifacts, and the difficulties inherent in using texts together with material evidence). This volume is a direct outgrowth of the Muenster meeting"--

Abstract: "This volume aims to understand religious aspects of dress in the ancient world by examining a diverse range of religious sources, including literature, art, performance, coinage, economic markets, and memories. Contributors demonstrate how dress developed as a topos within Judean and Christian rhetoric, symbolism, and performance, and show how religious meanings were entangled with other social logics, revealing the many layers of meaning attached to ancient dress, as well as the extent to which dress was implicated in numerous domains of religious life"--

Series Statement: Approaches to anthropological archaeology
Abstract: Death, grief and funerary practices are central to any analysis of social, anthropological, artistic and religious worlds. However, cemeteries – the key conceptual and physical site for death – have rarely been the focus of archaeological research. Prioritizing Death and Society examines the structure, organisation and significance of cemeteries in the Southern Levant, one of the key areas for both migration and settlement in both prehistory and antiquity.
Abstract: Spanning 6,000 years, from the Chalcolithic to the present day, Prioritizing Death and Society presents new research to analyse the formation and regional variation in cemeteries. By examining both ancient and present-day – nationally Jewish – cemeteries, the study reveals the commonalities and differences in the ways in which death has been and continues to be ritualised, memorialised and understood. -- Publisher.

Abstract: "Islam emerged amid flourishing Christian and Jewish cultures, yet students of Antiquity and the Middle Ages mostly ignore it. Despite intensive study of late Antiquity over the last fifty years, even generous definitions of this period have reached only the eighth century, whereas Islam did not mature sufficiently to compare with Christianity or rabbinic Judaism until the tenth century. Before and After Muhammad suggests a new way of thinking about the historical relationship between the scriptural monotheisms, integrating Islam into European and West Asian history. Garth Fowden identifies the whole of the First Millennium--from Augustus and Christ to the formation of a recognizably Islamic worldview by the time of the philosopher Avicenna--as the proper chronological unit of analysis for understanding the emergence and maturation of the three monotheistic faiths across Eurasia. Fowden proposes not just a chronological expansion of late Antiquity but also an eastward shift in the geographical frame to embrace Iran. In Before and After Muhammad, Fowden looks at Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alongside other important developments in Greek philosophy and Roman law, to reveal how the First Millennium was bound together by diverse exegetical traditions that nurtured communities and often stimulated each other"--From publisher.

Abstract: While the study of networks has grown exponentially in the past decade and is now having an impact on how archaeologists study ancient societies, its emergence in the field has been dislocated. This volume provides a coherent framework on network analysis in current archaeological practice by pulling together its main themes and approaches to show how it is changing the way archaeologists face the key questions of regional interaction. Working with the term 'network' as a collection of nodes and links, as used in network science and social network analysis, it juxtaposes a range of case studies and investigates the positives and negatives of network analysis. With contributions by leading experts in the field, the volume covers a broad range: from Japan to America, from the Palaeolithic to the Precolumbian."-- Publisher's website.

Abstract: Kafka's use of silence and gesture in depictions of violence are meant to evoke empathy in the reader. One of the most sophisticated examples of this stylistic move occurs in his aphorisms and parable on Abraham. The use of silence and gesture as well as the turn toward aphorism and parable are factors of Kafka's heritage as a writer in fin de siècle Austria-Hungary. The similarities of style and theme between the German and Jewish literary traditions, both of which influenced Kafka, has led to an imbalance in scholarly understanding of the origins of Kafka's style. Ignoring both the influence that German-language intellectual trends had on Kafka as well as the works of Kafka's that appear prior to 1912 - the year that Kafka wrote ‘Das Urteil’ and the year after his first encounter with the Yiddish theater -leads to a misunderstanding of the origins of Kafka's style. It is easily demonstrable that Kafka's style is rooted in German letters, and that many fundamental elements of his style, such as the use of silence and gesture, occur in works prior to 1912.

Abstract: The memoir is partially made up of excerpts from the author’s mother’s memoir, ‘A time of fear, a time of hope’ by Brigitte Steiner, which describes her and her family’s life in pre-war Germany, their immigration to and beginnings in the United States in the 1930s, and visits to Germany after the war. In addition, the author draws from his maternal grandmother’s diary during her years in wartime Germany, when she witnessed his paternal grandmother’s deportation to a concentration camp. Finally, the author describes various later events, like the laying of a “Stolperstein” in front of his grandparent’s former home in Germany.

Abstract: "Reconstituted families in Late Antiquity addresses the phenomena of remarriage after divorce or widowhood in society, law and mentality of the Jewish, pagan and Roman-Christian antiquity. Posits a consistency between a changing Jewish marriage law in the first century and the beginning of the formation of a new Christian view of the family structure. Jewish law in the waning ersteheliche legal protection for children in blended families belonged to the concrete horizon of experience of the first Christians, and can paint responsible for the emergence of a reactionary conservative Christian morality divorce. The development of these Christian marriage values and the degree of their legal and social manifestation to the end of Late Antiquity at the center of the work. In consequence of the late antique legal developments include competition fears around the heritage and fear no more maternal or paternal deprivation on key aspects of late antique patchwork families. A similar phenomenon can also be based on literary texts gain, which in late antiquity - continue drawing not the stereotype of the wicked step-family - unlike in imperial times. A broad legal comparison between classical and late antique marriage legislation shows a hand in both quantity and quality to Christianisierungstendenzen, on the other hand also makes concrete reconstructions emotion-related living conditions of late antiquity stepfamilies. The final chapter highlights reconstituted families in the Gothic and Germanic-Frankish Early Middle Ages"--Publisher's website.

Abstract: "In the heart of the ancient Near East (modern Middle East) and at a crossroads between once mighty powers such as Assyria to the east and Egypt to the south is a tiny piece of land -- roughly the size of New Jersey -- that is as contested as it is sacred. One cannot even name this territory without sparking controversy. Originally called Canaan after its early inhabitants (the Canaanites), it has since been known by various names. To Jews this is Eretz-Israel (the Land of Israel), the Promised Land described by the Hebrew Bible as flowing with milk and honey. To Christians it is the Holy Land where Jesus Christ -- the messiah or anointed one -- was born, preached, and offered himself as the ultimate sacrifice. Under the Greeks and Romans, it was the province of Judea, a name which hearkened back to the biblical kingdom of Judah. After the Bar-Kokhba revolt ended in 135 C.E., Hadrian renamed the province Syria-Palestina, reviving the memory of the long-vanished kingdom of Philistia. Under early Islamic rule the military district (jund) of Filastin was part of the province of Greater Syria (Arabic Bilad al-Sham). In this book, the term Palestine is used to denote the area encompassing the modern state of Israel, the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan, and the Palestinian territories"--
