Abstract: "Le projet de rédiger l'inventaire des documents consistoriaux concernant l'histoire du judaïsme algérien est né en 1979 sous l'impulsion de Gérard Nahon et soutenu par l'Institut Ben Zvi de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Richard Ayoun a accompli la tâche colossale de rechercher, d'étudier ces archives en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis et en Algérie, de les dépouiller, les analyser et les répertorier avec rigueur, patience et détermination. Cet inventaire analytique des archives consistoriales des Juifs d'Algérie, depuis la conquête française en 1830 jusqu'à «la séparation des Églises et de l'État» en 1905, procure un accès direct au plus important ensemble de documents existants sur le sujet, les archives propres aux communautés d'Algérie ayant pratiquement disparu en 1962 dans la tourmente de l'exode. L'ouvrage couvre l'évolution du statut des Juifs d'Algérie ainsi que leur vie professionnelle, sociale, religieuse et culturelle. Le complète une bibliographie d'une extrême richesse étendue à des périodiques locaux aujourd'hui malaisément accessibles, pourvue d'une liste alphabétique des articles par auteurs et par titres. La période noire du judaïsme algérien durant la vague antisémite de la fin du XIXe siècle et l'Affaire Dreyfus, y apparaît sous un jour saisissant: vision au quotidien de la violence, de la haine suinant des articles de L'antisémite algérien (1897-1898), de son avatar le Nouvel Antisémite algérien (1898-1899),... Par delà l'objectif scientifique de l'auteur, demeurent la nécessité, la volonté, l'exigence, de retrouver la mémoire perdue des communautés juives algériennes, de la restituer, de la perpétuer. Ce livre se place dans la lignée des travaux archivistiques majeurs des XIXe et XXe siècles."--

Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

Abstract: The article re-examines exegetically the text of Eccl 3:11 which has always given scholars much labour in order to understand its true meaning. This paper re-takes this enterprise to see if a conclusion is possible. The contribution consists in the analysis of the text and its context; after which, a comparison between the Qohelet verse and other sources of thought, particularly Job, is undertaken. The influence of the Hellenistic cultural environment is also underscored. The result is that Qoheleth, while referring to the Jewish wisdom tradition, gives it however a speculative twist which leads to a pessimistic reasoning, but also to a positive ethic of human conduct that becomes a realistic and adult model of life.

Abstract: The pericope Hos 3:1-5 passes on narrative materials that poses a various number of riddles. Hosea receives the mission to repurchase and love a woman but still abstain from her. This narrative of their relationship, which is mainly realised in abstinence, is told in the form of a first person’s perspective report and becomes the parable for describing JHWH’s relationship with his people. Who is this woman? Is it Gomer, the mother of the three children who are mentioned in Hos 1:2-9? Is it another woman besides Gomer, whom the prophet needs to ransom? Is it a biographical note about the prophet’s life or a fictional scene composed for a fundamental theological proposition? The persuasions regarding this question are various. The following contribution demonstrates that the biblical author reveals the radicality and depth of the divine love to his people within the framework of the prophet’s failed marriage. The numerous transverse relations of Hos 3:1-5 to the previous chapters (Hos 1-2) and to the subsequent chapters (Hos 4-14) identify Hos 3 as a connecting chapter, wherein the whole theology of the book of Hosea concentrates.

Abstract: Zech 14:10-11 constitutes a brief unit of the last chapter of Zechariah. It is centered on the vision of a new Jerusalem that has just come out of the war against the nations. This new Jerusalem now becomes the center of the world in which YHWH is recognized as God of the whole world. Along with Jerusalem, these verses also present the land as a transformed historical and territorial reality. Their new vitality is presented as an expression of the restoration of the covenant with God. Although Zechariah’s attention is focused on the future, some elements suggest that he has in his mind the situation of Jerusalem and the nation of the second half of the 5th century BC. The author also examines similarities and differences between this section and other similar ones of the same chapter, and focuses also on possible references with other texts of the Book of the Twelve Prophets.

Abstract: The scholion to Zech 12:10 written in the margin of Barberinus Graecus 549 was transcribed with a misreading by Walton (1657), Fields (1875) and Ziegler (20164). We propose to correct the phrase τοῦ ἀντὶ σκαταβατοῦ to read τοῦ ἀντὶς καταβατοῦ, understanding it as a reference to the following page of the codex. The meaning of the note is thereby clearer. The scholiast wanted to point out that the evangelists cited indifferently various translations of the OT. He gave, therefore, two examples, Zech 12:10 in John 19:37 and Zech 13:7 in Matt 26:31, which attest to the choice of a version different from the LXX and is closer to a Hebrew text similar to the Masoretic one.

Abstract: The common translation of the biblical Hebrew נבָָל is “foolish, a fool”. Psalms 14 and 53 use this word to describe a man (people) who denies God (“A fool says in his heart: There is no God”). The purpose of this article is to examine to what degree the notion of נבָָל in Psalms 14 and 53 are connected with the notion of foolishness as well as with the notion of unbelief. First I analyze the Hebrew manuscripts and the translations of the Hebrew Bible, both ancient and modern. Next I examine the semantics of the נבָָל and his rejection of God in Ps 14 and 53. And at the end, I study the offensive character in the connection between foolishness and unbelief. Different translations and semantic analysis see in נבָָל a foolish man. In the domain of biblical logic, this statement is still true. Inappropriate connecting of foolishness with unbelief should be solved, not by a rejection of the biblical logic but by promotion of a pluralistic logic with different axioms.

Abstract: Chapters 20 and 21 of the Book of Judges narrate the inter-tribal war between the coalition of the tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin (Judg 20:1-48), up to the climax with the kidnappings of the girls from Jabesh of Gilead and Shiloh, so as to allow the survival of the tribe of Benjamin (21:1-25). In the framework of the narrated events are four consultations made to the Lord which are always undertaken on the part of the coalition of the tribes of Israel: the first consultation, before beginning the actual war (20:18); the second, following the first defeat inflicted on Benjamin by the coalition (20:23); the third, after the second defeat inflicted on Benjamin by the coalition (20:26-28); the fourth, in the form of a lament, after having taken note of the almost total extermination of the tribe of Benjamin (21:2-4). There is a progression between the first consultations with the Lord by the coalition of the children of Israel, with at least a partial awareness of the situation, right up to questioning the war itself against the “brother” Benjamin. The Lord had trusted in this awareness and ensured a victory for the coalition. However the coalition did not treat Benjamin as a “brother”, but as a pagan population. At the final consultation after the massacre, the Lord does not even respond, nor could the coalition understand his answer, because now it is only purely human decisions, which further precipitate the country into a state of chaos.

Abstract: The article analyzes the text of Genesis 4:1-16 from the point of view of the literary genre of crime (4:3-8) and punishment (4:9-15) and considers the climax of the story is the cry of the slain brother’s blood (4:10b). This exegetical-theological analysis of the theme of conflict between the brothers also takes into account the immediate context (Gen 2-3; 4:17-26) of the history of origins (Gen 1-11), as well as points of contact with the New Testament (Matt 5:23-24; Rom 12:21; 1 John 3:14).

Abstract: The phenomenon of ritual criticism in prophetic writings of the HB/OT is one that highlights the discrepancy between ritual and lifestyle on the one hand and emphasizes the significance of rituals for the improvement of ethical life of people. Rituals are viewed as Ancient Israelite's vertical dimension of the relationship between God and man while ethics are its horizontal components (man to man relationship). In Micah, rituals are presented as acts of people's relationship with Yahweh (worship, offering and sacrifices) that do not impact positively on the horizontal dimension (socialjustice). This dysfunction of relationship is poignantly addressed by Micah as his oracle switches from confrontation to reconciliation. This article addresses the confrontation between Yahweh and Israel/Judah by juxtaposing two dominant spheres of Israel/Judah's religious life; ritual and lifestyle. Micah 6:6-8 stands in sharp contrast to the extravagance and mockery of rituals and as an alternative presents a message most profound and insightful for an invaluable decision. A truly ethical religion, Micah holds, is not about extravagant rituals but personal duty and responsibility for fulfilling that duty in society.

Abstract: At the inauguration in Tlemcen (Algeria) of a monument to commemorate those who died in the First World War, several rabbis and members of the community refused to attend the event, because the monument was a statue of a soldier bearing arms. Rabbi Élie Benguigui was asked whether the "halakha" permitted participation in the ceremony and whether it was allowed to leave the statue unaltered. In a "tešubha" published in this article (from a manuscript belonging to the author), he replied that despite the categorical prohibitions codified in "halakha", he recommended relying on the more lenient view expressed by R. Ašer ben Yeḥiel, and he permitted both attending the ceremony and leaving the monument intact. This suggests that in order to rule on specific cases, an analysis of the Talmudic sources is required while established authorities may be bypassed. The prohibitions concerning sculptures reveal two opposing views and we note a much more tolerant attitude among rabbis living in Christian countries than those in Moslem lands. Finally, it will be noted that the rabbis known as "native" had from that time adopted the French patriotism that prevailed among the Jews of Metropolitan France.

Abstract: This article challenges the assumption that insofar as the Jewish communities of Babylonia were a "people of the book", their book was a" Hebrew" Bible. Functionally the Bible that most people would have known was the Aramaic Targum of Onqelos and Jonathan. The Bible's content-its law, narrative, and prophecy-was culturally mediated through Aramaic. Even in Rabbinic communities, where some had competence in Hebrew that gave them ready access to the original, the lack of formal and systematic study of Miqra may have made the Targum the tradition of first resort for understanding the Hebrew. The situation in the Aramaic-speaking east may not, then, have been all that different from the west, where a Greek Bible shaped the religious identity of the Greek-speaking Jewish communities. This essay is offered as a contribution to the neglected study of the role of Bible translation in the history of Judaism.

Abstract: Leviticus 25 details legislation for the jubilee, the year concluding seven cycles of seven years in which real property returns to its original family allotment. Many understand the jubilee as an impracticable fantasy while others have sought to uncover evidence of its observance in ancient Israel. In this essay, I move the conversation away from this binary of scholarly perception and instead engage the jubilee from the horizon of its plausibility as an institution in ancient Israelite society. By "plausible," I do not mean that this legislation's enactment was likely or actual; evaluating the institution's "plausibility" is a determination of whether it was credible within the structures of Israelite and Judahite society. I contend that the jubilee was theoretically conceivable in this society because of analogous practices in the ancient Near East and the agrarian society that the Levitical jubilee presumes and in which it makes sense as a plausible institution.

Abstract: In Job 3:12, when cursing the day of his birth, Job asks, "Why did knees meet me?" This colon has been interpreted as referring either to a father who takes up his child in a gesture of acceptance, to a mother who puts the child on her knees to nurse it, or to another woman (midwife) who sits underneath the parturient mother. I argue, however, that the colon refers to the knees of Job's mother who gives birth in the kneeling position. The argument relies on biblical evidence, but also on textual and iconographic sources from various ancient cultures. The material demonstrates that, in antiquity, there were times when the kneeling position was considered the mental prototype for giving birth. Therefore, it is plausible that the author of Job 3 naturally referred to such a posture when writing v. 12a.

Abstract: This article examines the Welsh contribution to the history of Britain's Orthodox synagogues between the late eighteenth and early twenty-first centuries. It draws on spatial theory to address the communal, constructive, and performative nature of Wales's synagogues and offers the first nationwide examination of the country's Jewish houses of worship. It also makes a plea for Welsh historians to consider the synagogue when discussing Wales's sacred places and spaces, as well as a call to scholars of Jewish studies, particularly those who employ England's metropolitan synagogues as metonyms for British synagogues, to appreciate the importance of both the shared and varied synagogal experiences of British Jewry. How the history of Wales's synagogues both resembled and differed from those found elsewhere in the British Isles is at the core of this article, as is the powerful role of geographical place and topography in shaping this experience. It also challenges established historical narratives of some of Wales's synagogues and examines their fluidity and transformational nature throughout the last two centuries.

Abstract: Psalm 35 appears to be one of the scariest Psalms because of the various expressions of hate and the Psalmist invoking wrath and death on his enemies. In the Western context, it is not one of the favourites of the Psalms. However, in a Yoruba context, Psalm 35 is one of the favourites because of its use for purposes of defence, victory, and protection. The purpose of this article is to discuss how Psalm 35 is used in a Yoruba context to meet the peculiar need of Yoruba people against enemies. Although there are similarities and differences between Psalm 35 and Yoruba ofo oro ogede, the similarities actually influence Yoruba Christians and non-Christians to use Psalm 35 like ofo or madarikan, orogede with a firm belief that it contains a more mysterious power from God than the Yoruba ofo, ogede and madarikan. Psalm 35 is, therefore, read, memorized, chanted, sung or inscribed in parchment to express the African faith, and their personal origin from God. Psalm 35 is also read in order to motivate God to perform a miracle as he has done originally with the people of ancient Israel.

Abstract: This article examined Mal 2:16 in relation to the prohibition of divorce today in some churches in Nigeria. The text is perhaps the most commonly quoted passage by preachers to support prohibition of divorce, possibly because many of the English versions make it a direct condemnation from God and preachers rarely consider other English versions that read differently. It was found out that the passage relates to certain Jewish men who divorced their native wives and married women of foreign faiths. It was also discovered that in view of Deut 24:14, among other OT texts, Mal 2:16 could not have prohibited divorce. Rather, what it condemns is the purpose of the divorce, namely to marry women of foreign faiths. Hence, Mal 2:16 is relevant in contemporary Nigeria, not as a prohibition of divorce, but in the context of marriage abandonment.

Abstract: Several studies in recent years have sought to articulate the significance of the tribe of Benjamin for historical and literary studies of the Hebrew Bible. This paper suggests that the received text of Genesis 35-50 both reflects and illumines the complexities of Israelite identity in the pre-exilic, Babylonian, and Persian periods. The fact that Benjamin is the only son born to "Israel" (other sons are born to "Jacob") points to Israel's origins in the land that came to be called "Benjaminite." Between Josephites to the north and Judahites to the south, Benjaminites preserved a unique identity within the polities of Israel, Judah, Babylonian Yehud, and Persian Yehud. In Genesis 35 and 42-45 in particular, the silent character Benjamin finds himself in the middle of a tug-of-war between his brothers, particularly his full-brother Joseph and his half-brother Judah. The conciliatory message of the narrative of Genesis 35-50 for later communities comes into sharper focus when we see the compromise between tribal identities embedded in the text.1
