Abstract:
Examines the 1984 production of the Oberammergau passion play, which was based on the 1980 text which comprised some revisions. However, of the 28 changes suggested by Leonard Swidler and Gerard Sloyan (see this issue of "Face to Face") only six were actually implemented. Maintains that the demand of the town's citizens to retain their tradition while freeing the play from the taint of antisemitism should be respected. This is one of three papers (published in this issue) which were delivered at a symposium held by the German Studies Association in Denver in October 1984, on the Oberammergau passion play. The papers are followed by a response by Saul S. Friedman (pp. 21-24), in which he calls for further revision of the play's text.
