Abstract:
Discusses the regular ritual of anti-Jewish violence carried out at Easter time in Aragón in the late 13th-late 14th centuries, interrupting the otherwise friendly coexistence between Jews and Christians. Jews and their property were stoned by children and young clerics on Good Friday, after the holiday liturgy and the reenactment of the Passion. Argues that the King, who generally protected the Jews but did not stop this injurious custom, played out various groups against each other to boost his own power. The ritual violence also served as a reminder of Jewish inferiority and vulnerability, of the difference between Jews and Christians, and of the limits of "convivencia".
