Abstract:
Highlights the strong support accorded by Viennese women to the charismatic politician Karl Lueger, who became mayor of Vienna with the aid of antisemitic rhetoric. Lueger's "Amazons" established the Christliche Wiener Frauenbund in 1897. These women expressed their antisemitism through support for a boycott of Jewish businesses and for street riots, contending that they were attempting to protect their families from Jewish "immorality". Contemporary Jewish men often cited such cases not only to indicate the extent of Viennese antisemitism but also to express conservative ideas of gender, i.e. that women should not be involved in politics.
