Abstract:
Discusses traditional Jewry vs. modern Jewry, and what differentiates them from one another. Talks about Sephardim and Ashkenazim in Israeli society today, and in the modern period in general in Europe (e.g. Germany and Poland) and in the Middle East (especially Yemen). Religious Jewry basically observed the same laws, and were opposed to making changes. There were connections between observant Jews in Europe with those in the Middle East. However, modern (secular) Jewry embraced changes in their lifestyle. Contends, therefore, that traditional (religious) Jews, throughout the modern period up to the present, had much more in common with each other than they had with secular Jews. Studies on differences between Ashkenazi and Sephardi communities in Israel have neglected to deal with the common element of religious practices.
