Kurzfassung:
An abridged French version appeared in "Memoire et histoire: La Resistance" (Toulouse: Privat, 1995). Reflects on the nature of the Jewish resistance in France; in particular, whether it should be placed in the framework of the French resistance or in the framework of the Jewish resistance against the Holocaust, which had its specific aim - to save the lives of Jews. Jews played a significant role in the French resistance and were among its initiators. The spectrum of motives which impelled Jews to join resistance groups was complex; many were driven by French patriotism and downplayed their specific Jewish interest in the struggle. Although some sections of the French resistance shared antisemitic stances with the Vichy regime, later, in 1942-43, when the deportations began, they did not turn a blind eye to the Jews' plight and helped them. Some Jewish organizations (e.g. OSE), which began in full compliance with the authorities, later resorted to passive resistance. Concludes that Jewish resistance in France belongs to both the French and to anti-Holocaust Jewish resistance.
