Kurzfassung:
Discusses the fate of Jews in Slovakia at the time of the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic. Jews were accused of cooperation with the Magyars, who wanted the land to be part of Hungary. The accusation was used as a primary tool in the instigation of widespread antisemitism. Waves of looting both Jewish and non-Jewish property swept through Slovakia, and some people were murdered. Such actions were viewed as justified when carried out against Jews. Czechoslovak authorities even took part in these instigations. Contends that the opportunity for looting was the major cause behind the riots, but recognizes the importance of political and social factors as well. The Jewish reaction was an appeal to international Jewish organizations and to President Masaryk for assistance.
