Kurzfassung:
A paper delivered at a conference held at the Université de Haute Alsace, April 1997. Interprets the theories of the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs on the theme of collective memory, divided into three categories: familial, religious, and class-related. Applies these ideas to research conducted in 1983 by students at the Institut de Sociologie in Strasbourg on antisemitism in an Alsatian village. In 1870, the population was 40% Jewish; only two of those families remain. Compares the nostalgia of a group of Jews over 65 years of age for the prewar friendships with their Catholic neighbors to the more negative memories of the Christian villagers regarding Jews. Analyzes the concept of collective memory and reveals how this is transmitted through the generations and adapted to accommodate new social, political, and cultural contexts.
