Kurzfassung:
Surveys consecutive translations, editions, and uses of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in the Arab world, from the publication of the first Arabic edition in Damascus (1921) up to the present. Comments on its use in anti-Zionist campaigns amongst Arabs as well as in neo-Nazi circles in Europe, and in other countries struggling with "imperialism", "capitalism" and "world Zionism". Discusses neo-Nazi ties and fascination with Muslim fundamentalism. Explains why the "Protocols" resists critical thought, and influences many people in varied political circumstances. Analyzes five functions of the myth of a "world Jewish conspiracy": it explains chaos in history, which is confusing to ordinary people; it is an alleged defense against menace; it justifies anti-Jewish violence; it serves a mytho-political function in pointing out the enemy and facilitating mobilization against him; it promotes "recycling" of the "Protocols" in various historical periods and circumstances, because it is historically undetermined. Concludes that the success of the "Protocols" is due to its magical elements and its Manichaean duality of Good and Evil.
