Abstract:
Describes the nationalist unrest which has found expression in almost every one of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union. States that the balance sheet of Soviet Jews under "perestroika" has been mixed. There has been a relaxation of discriminations that had been imposed in education, employment, and advancement, and a legitimization of Jews and Jewish topics. The relations between Jews and other minorities are more complex. The Latvian, Lithuanian, and Ukrainian authorities have been demonstratively reassuring to Jews, but the extremists of the Russian nationalist movement pose a threat by way of an eruption of antisemitism. Refers to recent antisemitic manifestations and the mass emigration of Jews from the USSR.
