Abstract:
Recent debates over antisemitism, triggered by antisemitic waves in Europe since the second Intifada (2000), have unified the Jewish world and opened up a gap between it and Europe. Argues that Jewish suspicion of Europe is justified concerning political and economic issues, but not concerning the basic European values of democracy and human rights. The "New Europe" is sworn to preventing another "Shoah". Advocates reconciliation to close the gap which pits the two parties against each other and reinforces their worst tendencies. Discusses obstacles to reconciliation, discordance in timing in the processing of Holocaust memory, conceptual differences related to memory versus history, inverted geographical imperatives, parallel sufferings and memories, as well as the Jews' complex relationship with democracy. Contends that European Jewry plays a key role in bringing about reconciliation, perceived as crucial for the return of the Jews and Israel to historical normalcy and for Europe's renewal.
