Abstract:
Rejects the view that 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16 is an indiscriminate anti-Jewish polemic. Compares the structure of this text with that of the "Testament of Levi" 6, which deals with the story of Shechem and Dinah in Genesis 34, relating to the wrath of Levi that has come upon the Shechemites and God's wrath upon "the Jews" in Thessalonians. Concludes that Paul is not condemning all Jews to perdition nor is he implying that all of them are guilty of any of the things for which he indicts them. Paul, rather than engaging in an indiscriminate and emotional anti-Jewish polemic, is making a reasonable assessment of the generally negative Jewish response to God's work in Jesus Christ. Denies the alleged antisemitism in the New Testament.
