Abstract:
Asserts that despite radical positive changes in Christian attitudes toward Jews and Judaism, the Catholic Church's declarations in this regard (e.g. "Nostra Aetate", 1965) left some fundamental questions unresolved. These stem from Paul's epistles, due to his ambiguous approach to the Jews and difficulties in interpreting his approach. Remarks that Paul's letters contain the theory of the end of Jewish history, the identification of Jews with Esau (i.e. the "elder brother" rejected by divine election), and the belief in the final "salvation" of the Jews by conversion. Concludes that Paul's teachings led to an attitude of Christian superiority which makes a real dialogue today impossible. The progress made by the Church is in respect to Jews as persons, but not to Judaism as a religion.
