Abstract:
Heine, foreign correspondent in Paris for the Augsburg "Allgemeine Zeitung" at the time of the Damascus affair, wrote a series of articles which changed public opinion in Europe in favor of the Jews. His sources were newspaper reports, the reports of the Austrian consuls, and probably also letters received by Baron Rothschild. He ridiculed the ritual murder charge and condemned the French consul, Ratti-Menton, who had initiated and spread it, and the French prime minister, Adolphe Thiers (whom he had until then admired) for backing the consul. He also blamed the French Jews - with the notable exceptions of Rothschild and Crémieux - for their lack of concern for their Syrian brethren. Argues that these articles and his return to work on the novel "Der Rabbi von Bacherach" show Heine's renewed identification with the Jewish people.
