Abstract:
Noting that the deicide accusation is a central argument in Christian anti-Judaism, analyzes the historical authenticity of the Gospel accounts of Jesus' trial or interrogation by Jewish authorities. Points out that the Evangelists did not witness the events they describe; that their accounts are not corroborated by outside sources; and that they contradict each other. Concludes that these accounts are not history, but stories fashioned to transmit theological teachings. Jesus was apparently crucified by the Romans because he was seen as a threat to the public order, and there is no evidence that Jews - and certainly "the" Jews - played any part.
