Abstract:
Discusses three of Grumberg's plays which deal with the Holocaust: "Dreyfus" (1974), "L'Atelier" (1979), and "Zone libre" (1991). "Dreyfus" portrays an aborted attempt by amateur actors in a Jewish community hall in Lodz, in 1930, to stage a play that shows the consequences of antisemitism and judicial errors. "L'Atelier" is set in a Jewish tailor's shop in Paris, covering events from 1945-52, focusing on the effect of the Holocaust on the lives of the main protagonists. "Zone libre" deals with the lives of a group of Jews who leave Paris after the mass arrests of 1942 and find refuge on a family farm in the Free Zone. Stresses that Grumberg presents the Jewish experience - the arrests, concentration camps, brutality, and murder - indirectly. His techniques are those of the "theater of the everyday"; domestic scenes reflect the stress of external events.
