Abstract:
Joseph Saralvo, a Portuguese convert to Judaism, was burnt at the stake in Rome in 1583. He and other Jews were arrested in Italy and tortured at the instigation of the Portuguese Inquisition, which was incensed by proselytizing activities carried out by Jews amongst Portuguese Crypto-Jews in Ferrara. Presents an account of Saralvo's martyrdom found in a manuscript.
