Abstract:
One of the economic branches in Egypt in the 16th and 17th centuries in which the Jews were highly involved was leasing. In the last 30 years, research on this topic has progressed. From contemporary sources, mostly in Hebrew (rabbinic literature and Cairo Genizah sources), we learn about various kinds of leasing, such as: collecting regular taxes and agrarian taxes; receiving licenses to extract natural resources such as salt in the al-Manzalah region, as well as other minerals; collecting customs duties in seaports; and functioning as agents or managers at the Cairo mint. To acquire the rights for carrying out such functions, significant amounts of money had to be paid. This article follows the excellent research conducted in 1989 by Dr. Simon Stober, who analyzed the phenomenon of leasing by Egyptian Jews in that period. Based on unknown sources from the Cairo Genizah, details are added that were discovered by the author of this article after the publication of Stober’s article in 1989. The article provides a brief survey of all published Genizah documents relevant to this topic.
