Abstract:
Lists the few known poems in Hebrew describing the expulsion from Spain written at the time of the events. Describes an elegy by an anonymous author, found in the Adler Collection of the Jewish Theological Seminary (ENA 2693.5). The text of the poem, nine stanzas, is presented. Discusses three important aspects: the emphasis on the mass conversion of the Jews of Castile, the mention of the expulsion of the Jews of Sicily (of which little is known), and the hint at harsh treatment of the exiles in Portugal in 1493 (synagogues and Jewish books were confiscated, and children were kidnapped and sent to the island of São Tomé).
