Abstract:
Discusses the theme of the empty tomb as part of a literary tradition which began roughly with the story of Aristeus in the 6th century B.C.E. and continued for twelve centuries, until the novel about Simeon. Focuses on the account of Jesus' empty tomb, his rapture to heaven, and his coming resurrection as described in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of Mark, and in early Christian literature in light of the ancient literary tradition (including Jewish and pagan accounts of ascent to heaven). Contends that "we must distinguish between two independent traditions, that of the rapture and that of the resurrection", since they contradict each other. The “empty tomb” belongs to the theme of rapture, and cannot therefore be proof of the resurrection.
