Abstract:
A paper delivered at a colloquium held at Haifa University, 1984. Between 1940-42, the CGQJ, under Xavier Vallat, promoted nationalist antisemitism directed mainly against immigrant Jews. From 1941 on, this policy was attacked by the German-sponsored racist Institut d'Étude des Questions Juives and its newspaper, and by George Montandon, a racist anthropologist. After the Nazi decision to implement the Final Solution, the new head of the Commissariat, Darquier de Pellepoix, endorsed racist antisemitism and created the Union Française pour la Défense de la Race which made propaganda use of radio, books, pamphlets, and conferences, and had several local branches. However, this propaganda was badly received, even among antisemites who were not racists and did not approve of the deportations. Unlike Vallat's antisemitism, which was seen to serve French interests, racist propaganda was identified with the Nazi occupation and collaboration.
