Abstract: States that, before the 1890s, antisemitism was non-existent in the French National Assembly. Absolute support for freedom of speech, and the beginning of the Dreyfus Affair, explain the appearance of antisemitism in the Chamber in 1895. Two interpellations by antisemitic deputies - Théodore Denis, close to Drumont, and Viscount d'Hugues - demanded the exclusion of Jews from the civil service. Both denounced what they called the "Jewish stranglehold" on France. Denis accused Jewish deputies of working for Jewish interests. Responses by the socialist Gustave Rouanet and the Jewish anarchist Alfred Naquet connected the Jewish and the social questions and emphasized the incoherence of antisemitism. Contends that the government's mollifying response, and the fact that the antisemites managed to occupy the Chamber for two days with their agenda, was a victory for them, though the interpellations had no legal consequences.

Abstract: Memoir by Annie Kamm, written in 1988. She describes her family history from the perspective of a journey to Poland with her brother Henri after the war. They visited the concentration camps in Poland where most of their family members died during the war. Their parents, born in Lublin (at that time in Russia, today in Poland), lived in Germany from 1919-1920, and then in Anvers, Belgium, where Annie Kamm (then Fanny Zorman) was born as the youngest of 7 siblings. She describes in detail the events between 1942 and 1945: hiding in Belgium, escape to France, capture by SS men when the family tried to cross the Swiss border, imprisonment in Montbeliard and in Belfort, transportation of her parents and siblings to the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Birkenau, her escape and life in hiding in Paris and Saint Cloud.

Abstract: A paper delivered at a colloquium held at Haifa University, 1984. Between 1940-42, the CGQJ, under Xavier Vallat, promoted nationalist antisemitism directed mainly against immigrant Jews. From 1941 on, this policy was attacked by the German-sponsored racist Institut d'Étude des Questions Juives and its newspaper, and by George Montandon, a racist anthropologist. After the Nazi decision to implement the Final Solution, the new head of the Commissariat, Darquier de Pellepoix, endorsed racist antisemitism and created the Union Française pour la Défense de la Race which made propaganda use of radio, books, pamphlets, and conferences, and had several local branches. However, this propaganda was badly received, even among antisemites who were not racists and did not approve of the deportations. Unlike Vallat's antisemitism, which was seen to serve French interests, racist propaganda was identified with the Nazi occupation and collaboration.

Abstract: Presents an analysis of French public opinion on the "Jewish question" based on the reports of the CGQJ. Between 1940-42 the CGQJ complained that the majority of the French population showed a lack of interest and cooperation in anti-Jewish persecution, and that antisemitic propaganda was ineffective. The French courts were criticized for indulgence toward Jews, and the universities for being pro-Jewish. However, they note that the population distinguished between Jewish citizens of France vs. immigrants. After the mass arrests of 1942 and protests by ecclesiastic authorities, growing popular opposition was noted. The CGQJ criticized the Vichy government as being too weak in its anti-Jewish measures, and denounced the Jewish UGIF for undermining anti-Jewish policy.

Abstract: Examines the paradoxical case of Charles Mercier du Paty de Clam, head of the Commissariat Général aux Questions Juives between February-May 1944, replacing Darquier de Pellepoix. Du Paty de Clam's father was Armand du Paty de Clam, a lawyer and accuser of Alfred Dreyfus in the investigation which led to Dreyfus' trial. His son Charles had an ambiguous attitude toward Jews. He was appointed as head of the CGQJ due to his father's background, but was dismissed in May 1944 for his passivity and disinterest in implementing Aryanization. Archival sources reveal that Charles had secret links with the French resistance, and that he made efforts to prevent the arrest and deportation of a number of Jews. Arrested in 1946, Du Paty de Clam was acquitted by the French court in 1947, but he died in 1948 due to an illness contracted while in prison.
