Abstract:
Discusses the Israeli writer Ka-Tzetnik's presentation of the Holocaust and the implications of the Israeli public's embracing of his writings, especially the authorities in charge of high school education. Focuses on Ka-Tzetnik's spectacular burning, in 1993, of a copy of his pre-Holocaust poetry held by the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. States that Ka-Tzetnik's writings on the Holocaust comprise the simplistic and frenzied reaction of an immature personality incapable of internalizing and presenting the complexity of Holocaust experiences. The obsessive destruction of his early writings suggests the internalization of his oppressor's values and indicates, also, the writer's incapability of coping with his guilt feelings regarding his survival. Only awareness of the self-destructive emotions simmering in Ka-Tzetnik's presentation of the Holocaust can prevent his reaction from becoming the main impression of survivors' reactions on the Holocaust memory in Israel.
