Abstract:
Describes the atmosphere in Czechoslovakia between the signing of the Munich Pact in September 1938 and the German occupation in March 1939. In the Czechs' attempt to placate the Germans, a wave of antisemitism was unleashed, expressed in the press, in cultural circles and in "purges" of the Jews from various institutions (hospitals, universities, sports clubs, theater, press, etc.). Jewish reactions were varied: ca. 27,000 (out of a population of ca. 118,000) emigrated, some committed suicide, some converted to Christianity, the Zionist camp was strengthened, while assimilated Jews tried to separate themselves from the community. The change was drastic in Czechoslovakia where Jews had previously enjoyed full democratic rights.
