Abstract: Documentary countering international claims of anti-Semitism, which aims to illustrate the satisfaction of Russian Jews living in the Jewish Autonomous Region
Abstract: The film opens with old newsreels showing the work of Jewish people to build a nation for themselves within the Soviet Union. It includes footage from the establishment of the capital Birobidjan in 1934. The narrator contrasts the old images of clearing land and agriculture with modern scenes of factories and urbanisation. There is an interview with a worker who tells of her happiness and equality, and with an American journalist invited to the city. Later in the film there is a section about the Second World War, and an interview with a Soviet war hero whose family were executed during the Holocaust; he now sits at the head of the Anti-Semitism Committee. The flourishing of the arts and music in the Jewish community is also considered, with particular focus on the violin; this section includes footage of violin lessons and an interview with a renowned Jewish musician. The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Birobidjan mark the end of the film. The final claim made by the narrator is that the people of all the Soviet nations are now all Soviets, all equals in the same nation

Abstract: The Nazis' persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust included the creation of prisoner hierarchies that forced victims to cooperate with their persecutors. Many in the camps and ghettos came to hold so-called "privileged" positions, and their behavior has often been judged as self-serving and harmful to fellow inmates. Such controversial figures constitute an intrinsically important, frequently misunderstood, and often taboo aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on Primo Levi's concept of the "grey zone," this study analyzes the passing of moral judgment on "privileged" Jews as represented by

Abstract: The film highlights how Jewish families are returning to the Moldovan city of Kishinev, where they are welcomed by Soviet society after having become disillusioned with their life in Israel. The USSR is presented as widely celebrating and encouraging Jewish culture with footage of a Jewish folk theatre production, Jewish literature stands and a synagogue. The film also tells the story of a daughter whose parents emigrated to Israel only to find themselves experiencing poverty, hostility and aggression at the hands of the capitalist system. Abstract: Feature film about the Kaufmans, a Jewish family living in Czechoslovakia during WWII, who are taken to Terezin (Theresienstadt), a transit base on the way to the extermination camps. [WARNING: contains scenes of dead bodies.]
Abstract: The film opens with documentary footage of Adolf Hitler and other high ranking Nazis, intercut with marching troops. On the same day that a Jewish optician is forced to resign, her colleague proposes. As Jews are banned first from attending the theatre, and then from holding jobs in the civil service, her family consider migrating to South America. Their attempts fail, and the elderly members of the family are deeply distressed when they are forced to wear a yellow star. The family host a wedding for the young couple and afterwards, a friend commits suicide to avoid his transportation to Terezin. Soon most of the family is transported; in one harrowing scene, the family file forward into the camp, while coffins are carried out. The grandfather dyes his hair to pass as a young man and in one memorable scene, the prisoners march through the rain past a morose band. Tony poses as a Jewish man to visit Terezin and when he returns finds his father and brother were arrested and "killed while escaping". He is arrested, off-screen, and his wife sent to Terezin. In a dramatic scene, the prisoners realise they are constructing a gas chamber when children transported from a different camp flee from the sight of showers. The film ends with jubilant scenes of liberation and the reunion of husband and wife at a cemetery

Abstract: Victoria Aarons and Alan L. Berger show that Holocaust literary representation has continued to flourish—gaining increased momentum even as its perspective shifts, as a third generation adds its voice to the chorus of post-Holocaust writers. In negotiating the complex thematic imperatives and narrative conceits of the literature of these writers, this bold new work examines those structures, ironies, disjunctions, and tensions that produce a literature lamenting loss for a generation removed spatially and temporally from the extended trauma of the Holocaust. Aarons and Berger address evolving notions of “postmemory”; the intergenerational transmission of trauma; inherited memory; the psychological tensions of post-Holocaust Jewish identity; tropes of memory and the personalized narrative voice; generational dislocation and anxiety; the recurrent antagonisms of assimilation and alienation; the imaginative reconstruction of the past; and the future of Holocaust memory and representation

Abstract: Antisemitism is on the rise in Europe, sometimes manifesting in violent acts against Jews, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies across Europe, the authors show how language plays a crucial role in activating antisemitism across a broad spectrum of social classes, investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns, and analyze “anti-Israelism” as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews

Abstract: The outsized influence of Jews in American entertainment from the early days of Hollywood to the present has proved an endlessly fascinating and controversial topic, for Jews and non-Jews alike. From Shtetl to Stardom: Jews and Hollywood takes an exciting and innovative approach to this rich and complex material. Exploring the subject from a scholarly perspective as well as up close and personal, the book combines historical and theoretical analysis by leading academics in the field with inside information from prominent entertainment professionals. Essays range from Vincent Brook’s survey of the stubbornly persistent canard of Jewish industry “control” to Lawrence Baron and Joel Rosenberg’s panel presentations on the recent brouhaha over Ben Urwand’s book alleging collaboration between Hollywood and Hitler. Case studies by Howard Rodman and Joshua Louis Moss examine a key Coen brothers' film A Serious Man (Rodman) and Jill Soloway’s groundbreaking television series Transparent (Moss)

Abstract: For five decades Golda Meir was at the center of the political arena in Israel and left her mark on the development of the Yishuv and the state. She was a unique woman, great leader, with a magnetic personality, a highly complex individual. She held some of the most important positions that her party and the State could bestow. She fulfilled most of them with talent and dignity. She failed in the top job – that of Prime Minister. This biography traces her origins, her American roots, her immediate family, her failed marriage, her rise in the party, the trade union movement, her massive and enduring achievements as Secretary of Labor and Housing, her ten year stint as foreign minister and finally the reasons that led to her failure as prime minister. She was a very good tactician, far less a strategist. She was a major builder of modern Israel whose influence on that country, on Israel-American relations and on Jewish history was evident primarily from 1969 to 1974. The author who served as spokesman for Golda Meir in 1973-1974 weaves a gripping story of one of the builders and leaders of the State of Israel

Abstract: Islam in the Post-Secular Society: Religion, Secularity and the Antagonism of Recalcitrant Faith critically examines the unique challenges facing Muslims in Europe and North America. From the philosophical perspective of the Frankfurt School’s critical theory, this book attempts not only to diagnose the current problems stemming from a marginalization of Islam in the secular West, but also to offer a proposal for a Habermasian discourse between the religious and the secular. By highlighting historical examples of Islamic and western rapprochement, and rejecting the ‘clash of civilization’ thesis, the author attempts to find a ‘common language’ between the religious and the secular, which can serve as a vehicle for a future reconciliation

Abstract: "In Mo(ve)ments of Resistance, Grinberg summarizes both his own work and that of other political economists, providing a coherent historical narrative covering the time from the beginning of Socialist Zionism (1904) to the Oslo Accords and the neoliberalization of the economy (1994-1996). The theoretical approach of the book combines eventful sociology, path dependency, and institutional political economy. Grinberg argues that historical political events have been shaped not only by political and economic forces but also by resistance struggles of marginal and weaker social groups: organized workers, Palestinians, and Mizrachi Jews. Major turning points in history, like the Separation War in 1948, the military occupation in 1967, and the Oslo peace process in 1993, are explained in the context of previous social and economic resistance struggles that affected the political outcomes

Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: Gershom Mendes Seixas-Sermon
Note: AMDigital Reference:P60/3/2/10 , Original document, long paper, folded vertically, three and a half pages. Mentions the 30th chapter of Deuteronomy and the discussion of the commandment to walk in G-d's way. Gershom discusses the notion that people choose whether or not to follow in G-d's way, thereby affecting what good or evil shall come upon them. Man is a 'free agent' and is responsible for all the transgressions he may commit. Gershom says that because the ruling powers have declared war, it is their duty to 'act as true and faithfull (sic) citizens, to support and preserve the honor, the dignity, and the independence of the United States of America!' War is an evil and even David, who was a warrior, viewed war as the greatest of all punishments. Gershom calls to the people to pray to G-d for protection and a strengthening of faith and to get rid of the evil that is around them. He discusses the horrible conditions that many people have been faced with and the numerous deaths that have occurred. He calls to his congregants to repent for their sins and to pray. He concludes by announcing several additional prayers that the congregation will say on behalf of their fellow Jews who are in trouble. [Note: This sermon and the prayers mentioned in it are the subject of letter 6 to Sarah, found in the previous folder]. The folder also includes a copy of the cover of Gershom Mendes Seixas' published Thanksgiving Sermon delivered in New York City on November 26, 1789. An article titled "A Fount of American Democracy," by Isidore S. Meyer, published in The Menorah Journal (October-December 1939) discusses this sermon. Contains Hebrew , Seixas Family Papers , Reproduction of Gershom Mendes Seixas - Sermon 1814, 1839 , American Jewish Historical Society
