    Abstract: Sabrina Schütz untersucht im vorliegenden Band die Vorstellungen von ›Nation‹ und ›Nationalismus‹ im frühen deutschen zionistischen Diskurs vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

    Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: "In The Concept of the Elect Nation in Byzantium, Shay Eshel shows how the Old Testament model of the ancient Israelites was a prominent factor in the evolution of Roman-Byzantine national awareness between the 7th and 13th centuries. The Byzantines' interpretation of the 7th century epic events as manifestations of God's wrath enabled them to incorporate the events into a paradigm which they now embraced: the Old Testament paradigm of the Israelite Elect Nation's complex relationship with God, a cyclic relation of sin, wrath, punishment, repentance and salvation. The Elect Nation concept enabled the Byzantines to express the shift in their collective identity toward a shrunken, yet more clearly defined, national awareness"--

    Abstract: Die Autorin vergleicht die Handlungsmöglichkeiten und Sprechweisen im ländlich geprägten Umfeld der drei Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen, Esterwegen und Moringen. Im Fokus steht das Verhältnis zwischen Personal, Insassen und Anwohnern. Dass die Lager nicht abgeschottet, sondern Teil der NS-Gesellschaft waren, verdeutlicht die Analyse der ökonomi-schen Beziehungen, der physischen Gewalt, der Konfliktpotentiale und Gewöhnungseffekte sowie ihrer gezielten Zurschaustellung für die Öffentlichkeit. Dabei bewegten sich die lokalen Akteure zwischen Zustimmung und Mit-machen, Distanzierung und Verweigerung. Die Studie hebt außerdem die Bedeutung des Lokalen für die erinnerungspolitischen Debatten nach 1945 hervor.

    Abstract: »Deutsche Staatschefs und deutsche Botschafter in Moskau kamen und gingen - aber Gustav Hilger blieb.« - Mit diesen Worten umschrieb Stalin jenen Mann, dessen Biografie im Mittelpunkt von Jörn Happels Studie steht. Als Experte, Diplomat und Dolmetscher war der gebürtige Moskauer von 1918 bis 1941 aus den deutsch-sowjetischen Beziehungen nicht wegzudenken. Er beriet zahlreiche Politiker und Wirtschaftsvertreter und übersetzte für Stalin und Molotov, Hitler und Ribbentrop. Ab 1941 arbeitete Hilger in Berlin als Ost-Experte gegen die Sowjetunion; diese Tätigkeit setzte er nach dem Krieg für die USA fort. Ab 1953 erklärte er im bundesdeutschen Auswärtigen Amt die Politik in Osteuropa. Folgt man der Perspektive Hilgers, kann die Position der Sowjetunion im 20. Jahrhundert in einer deutsch-sowjetisch-amerikanischen Verflechtungsgeschichte neu bestimmt werden. Seine Biografie eröffnet unerwartete Perspektiven auf die internationale Politik des 20. Jahrhunderts

    Abstract: The study seeks to reconstruct the Jewish history of political experience during the period of socialism and the Cold War, as exemplified in Leipzig, the second largest city in the German Democratic Republic. It reveals that Jewish life in East Germany was not shaped solely by the formal Jewish Community (Gemeinde), but also by one’s affiliation with religious and political currents, such as Reform, Orthodoxy, Zionism, socialism and communism. The relationship of the SED party to Jewish citizens was not rigidly fixed; rather, it was characterized by a dynamic process and subject to continuous re-negotiation. Hendrik Niether demonstrates that despite the adversities of the Cold War and state repression, there was constant communication between Jews in Leipzig, emigrés from Leipzig and Jewish organizations in Western Europe, Israel and the United States. The experience of the Holocaust constituted an element of mutual understanding between these different groups. Meanwhile, the East German society’s interest in Jewish history and culture grew more pronounced as its attraction towards Antifascism ebbed away from the 1970s onward. This trend was tangible not only in ecclesial and oppositional circles, but also among political actors concerned with history and culture within the SED.
