    Abstract: This memoir summarizes the professional life of Egon Basch, ca. 1876-1939. After describing his childhood and youth in Prague, he discusses his entry into banking in Prague and then, in 1910, in Linz. His career was interrupted by World War I. Egon Basch in this memoir gives a detailed account of the banking business. He also discusses Jewish life in Linz, the rise of the Nazis, and his immigration to Argentina. Besides also discussing his own family history, he gives a biographical sketch of Michael Bluemelhuber, a sculptor and poet in Steyr, Austria.

Recollections of the author's childhood in a Jewish family in rural Hungary. His parents were in the lumber business and had a license for selling alcoholic beverages. Description of family and business life. Education in the Jewish Public School of the Neological Jewish Community in Eperjes. Anecdotes of his childhood. Description of the difference between the orthodox and neological Jewish community in Eperjes. Sudden death of his father in 1877 and financial difficulties for the family. Move to Rosenberg, where his relatives had a "lunchtable" for Jewish students from the local gymnasium (high school) and the theological university. His brother Sami went to Vienna to study medicine. Bela attended the Piaristen Gymnasium in Rosenberg, which was led by the Piarist order. Between 1881-1884 he worked as an apprentice in the textile branch. Detailed description of his experiences during his apprenticeship in various places. From 1897-1890 military service in Budapest. In 1892 Bela Fraenkl moved to Vienna, where he worked in the wood and lumber trade. Circle of friends in Cafe Central. Bela managed to establish his own lumber and sawmill business. Marriage with Ella Gabriel in August 1894. The couple lived in the VIII District in Vienna and had three sons (Otto, Fritz, Freddy) and a daughter (Mimi). Death of his mother and other relatives during World War One. Retirement in 1930. Bela Fraenkl emigrated with his family to Switzerland in 1938.

Isidor Stern was enrolled in the Jewish elementary school at the age of six years. In 1868 he was sent for further studies to his uncle in Pyritz, where he attended the local Gymnasium (high school). Recollections of his Bar Mitzvah in 1870. Rebellion against the rigid laws of orthodox Judaism. Continuation of his education at a Catholic Gymnasium in Schrimm, where he experienced antisemitism and left the school. Work in a bank in Berlin. Relationship to his younger siblings. Work in a spirit producing company. Socialist activities. In 1879 his house was raided and he had to leave his job due to his political affiliations. He got a position for his company in Spain in 1880. Due to his growing competence he was ordered back to Posen and became one of the directors in 1886. Lotte was enrolled in the local gymnasium (high school), where she was one of the few female students. Move to Mannheim after the war. Lotte became a member of the local youth movement. After her graduation in 1926, Lotte studied literature, philosophy and art history at the university of Heidelberg. First awareness of antisemitism at university. Studies in Geneva, Frankfurt and Munich. Graduation and marriage with Walter Gruenwald in 1931. Birth of their sons Rolf (1932) and Hans (1935). Nazi take-over and first boycotts of Jewish stores. Delayed preparations for their emigration. Recollections of the night of the November pogrom in 1938. Her husband was taken to the Dachau concentration camp. Fervent endeavors to arrange exit permits. In October 1939 they were issued visas for Chile and left Germany via Italy. Start of a new life in Valparaiso. Language difficulties. Lotte obtained a position as a teacher in an English high school. Her husband founded a small business. Return to Germany years after the war.

In the night of the November pogrom in 1938 his father was arrested and sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. Chanan's sister Edith was sent to England with a Kindertransport in 1939. Outbreak of World War II. Occupation of Holland in 1940. Anti-Jewish regulations. Chanan became a member of a Maccabi youth group. Training at an agricultural plant in the North of Holland (Werkdorp). Move to Gouda in 1941, where he worked as a gardener. First deportations to concentration camps in the East.
    Abstract: Second part: Decision to attempt illegal emigration. With the help of Kurt Hannemann he received false identity papers and left Gouda in time to escape deportation to Poland. Life underground in Amsterdam. In April 1943 he left Amsterdam for the Belgium border in Breda. Escape to the French border in Roubaix and to Paris. Life underground in Rouen, Toulouse and Bordeaux. Various plans to cross the border to Spain failed. Contacts to the French resistance. Interrogation and imprisonment by the Gestapo. Release and escape to Spain via the Pyrenees in 1944.

    Abstract: Mit der Machtergreifung Hitlers 1933 wurde der Anti-Semitismus zur Staats-Doktrin. Ziel der Nationalsozialisten war es, die Juden physisch auszumerzen. Jede Erinnerung an Klang und Stimme jüdischer Künstler sollte ebenso vergessen gemacht werden wie die jiddische Sprache. Als der Berliner Rabbi Leo Baeck aus dem Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt befreit wurde, gab er der überzeugung Ausdruck, dass die 1000-jährige Geschichte des deutschen Judentums unwiderruflich zu Ende gegangen sei. Die vorliegende Dokumentation ist ein Beweis für den Sieg des Lebens über den Tod; denn unschätzbare Tondokumente wurden gerettet, mit enormem technischem Aufwand restauriert und nach sechzig Jahren wieder für alle Zeiten zugänglich gemacht. Unter ständiger Kontrolle der Gestapo konnten Mitglieder eines Jüdischen Kulturbundes in Berlin künstlerisch tätig sein, Schallplatten aufnehmen und vertreiben. Einige der in Berlin aufgenommenen Titel wurden 1934-1936 in Palästina herausgegeben - Vorgeschichte der Plattenindustrie Israels. Die über die ganze Welt verstreuten Platten existieren zumeist nur als Einzelstücke oder Testpressungen. Das Repertoire ist breitgefächert und umfasst u. a. klassische Musik, jiddische Komiker, deutsches Kabarett, palästinensische Volkslieder und vor allem kantorale Gesänge von unerhörter Ausdruckskraft. Die Edition umfasst 11 CDs mit einer Spieldauer von über 14 Stunden Musik, sowie eine DVD mit der Rekonstruktion des verloren geglaubten und nun erstmals vorgelegten Tonfilmes 'Hebräische Melodie' mit dem Geiger Andreas Weisgerber. Ein beigelegtes großformatiges, gebundenes und reich bebildertes Begleitbuch in deutscher und englischer Sprache enthält einen gemeinsamen Text des Biographen Horst H. J. P. Bergmeier, des Historikers Ejal Jakob Eisler und des Discographen Rainer E. Lotz, ein Geleitwort von Rabbi Andreas Nachama, ein Vorwort von Henryk Broder, eine Einführung in die jüdische Liturgie von Rabbi David Polnauer sowie eine Erklärung der Tontechnik von Ingenieur Robert M. Laue.
