    Abstract: Irene Runge’s 14th book was written on occasion of her 63rd birthday: instead of a speech, it was printed and delivered to 63 of her friends. The book is a memoir, and jumps back and forth in time. It consists mostly of personal memories and anecdotes, but there are also reflective passages and analyses. It is divided into many chapters, which resemble diary entries. Irene Runge was a member of the "second generation": She was born in the New York exile, but her parents moved back to Germany during a political climate in the USA, when it became very difficult for sympathizers with the communist party. Her memories give rich insight into the life as an emigrant in New York, but also as a re-emigrant in Germany. She writes about her disappointments with the evolving German Democratic Republic (GDR; experiences, which repeated again in 1989/1990, when the reunification with West Germany took place. The year 1989 had practical consequences for her private life when she lost her job at the university, because her past seemed not compatible. She discusses the PDS, the party which evolved from the communist party of Eastern Germany after the "Wende" (reunification), and life in Berlin after the reunification. At one point she asks whether the current Turkish-Muslim community in Berlin could be comparable to the living conditions of the Jewish community in the 1930. This is a rare memoir documenting many recent aspects of German-speaking Jewry.

    Abstract: The writing covers eight months, from February 1938 until September 15, 1938, when the family emigrated via airplane to London, England. The first chapter starts in February 1938, the day of Lisl's birthday. The author uses a fictional style throughout the memoir, naming herself Lisl instead of "I". The days following the Anschluss are described in detail: the persecution, being expelled from school, the arrest of her father--all from a child's perspective. A brief "epilogue" tells about Lisl taking pre-med classes at Canterbury College; and the family obtaining visas to the US and settling down in Los Angeles.

    Abstract: The memoir starts with a short description of political events in Austria before the Anschluss in the 1930s. He gives an account of Hitler's welcomed arrival in Vienna in March 1938, where he observed cheering crowds close to his apartment. He talks of the background and origin of his grandparents in Zablotov, Galicia, and Witznitz, Bukowina. Alfred Fox writes about childhood memories where the family went to Prater amusement park, made trips to spas at Bad Voeslau and boat trips on the Danube. Then he writes about the Anschluss, the November Pogrom where he saw synagogues burning, and where his father was taken to Dachau concentration camp. The family's emigration was difficult because of the quota system in the USA. They decided to leave for Belgium. He describes the ride on the train from Vienna to Cologne, were denied entry at the border to Belgium close to Aachen, but were told by a German officer a way how to sneak into Belgium. His father worked in Brussels as a tailor. The family fled from the German invasion to France (Bordeaux), and stayed in the Pyrenees until spring of 1941, went to Lyon and stayed there until spring of 1942. They went over the Alps into Switzerland with smugglers. They were put into a refugee camp in Zurich. He started to attend ORT organization's trade school class in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1947, he went to the USA, with the help of his uncle. The last 25 pages cover his time in the USA since. He married his wife Susanne (Pistiner) on September 17, 1950, who was also born in Vienna, joined the US army and the Korea War. The memoir illustrates Alfred Fox's life story with many personal & family photographs as well as a map of his emigration route.

    Abstract: The memoirs were originally written for the Harvard University competition in 1940 and were translated by the author in 2001. Reflections on his childhood in Germany and Austria. His parents were both from Poland. They moved to Vienna in 1921, where his father opened a haberdashery store in the Second district (Leopoldstadt). Otto attended primary school in Czerningasse. Birth of his sister Cecile in 1924. After his failing business endeavors his father decided to move back to Germany, where the family opened a department store in Elbing, East Prussia. Otto attended Gymnasium, where he was one of only two Jewish students in his class. Growing Nazi movement among students. Summer vacations on the Baltic Sea. Private piano lessons. Hitler’s rise in Germany and life under National Socialism. Bar mitzvah in 1933. Anti-Jewish boycotts. His father fled to Vienna in order to escape a rounding up of Jews. The family followed soon after to Austria. Otto attended Gymnasium in the Zirkusgasse and started to work as a tutor. Member of a youth group and hiking tours in the mountains. Recollections of the Anschluss in 1938. Fervent attempts to obtain an exit visa for the United States, where they had a relative in New York. Description of discriminations and frequent attacks on Jewish friends and relatives in the weeks after the Anschluss. Otto was picked up by Nazi stormtroops. He was forced to hold up an anti-Jewish sign and was walked up and down, receiving beatings and spittings in front of a jeering crowd. Detailed account of the atmosphere within the Jewish population. After graduation John started a job in a bakery. The family was granted British Citizenship in 1949. John Schaffa decided to join the Royal Air Force and was stationed at the base in Henlow for two years. Resuming his career as a pastry chef. Position at the Confiserie Hirsch in Chur, Switzerland.

    Abstract: The memoir is a transcript of an interview with Hilde Birnbaum from June to August of 1999, conducted by Judith Bendor in Seattle, Washington. Description of the Frankfurt Jewish community, where Hilde’s father was the leader of the Gemeinde. Hilde had private lessons in Hebrew with the rabbi Caesar Seligmann. Hilde reflects on the time leading up to the rise of Nazism in Germany. She was a law student and was already very aware of the dangers of National Socialism prior to 1933 due to her frequent travels abroad. In 1931 she worked in an internship at a law firm in London. After the overwhelming success of the Nazis at the elections she decided not to return to Germany, since she did not see a future for herself as a woman and a Jew. Her father convinced her to finish her studies in Germany. Continuation of studies in Freiburg and encounter with Nazi student groups as a member of the social-democratic student faction. Graduation and Referendar position in Limburg in 1932. In March of 1933 she left Germany with her sister Edith for England, being warned by colleagues at court of the anti-Jewish boycot. They crossed the Dutch border and waited for invitations from relatives in London in order to get an entry permit for England. They were warmly received by the Heim family and settled in London. Difficulties of finding work. Hilde was introduced to influential British journalists and politicians, who disregarded her concerns of the possible dangers of Nazi Germany.
    Abstract: The following years she travelled frequently to Germany to convince her parents and friends to leave the country, until she was declared an enemy of the Reich and lost her German citizenship. Her mother started preparations to leave without the knowledge of her husband. Observations about life in Nazi Germany. Trip to Palestine in 1936. In 1938, only weeks before “Kristallnacht”, Hilde’s parents joined her in London, before they went to the United States. Her sister Edith had already left with her husband for Seattle in 1936. Preperations for Hilde’s emigration to the United States. She arrived in Seattle in the winter of 1938.

Outbreak of World War One and increasing patriotism. Recollection of his bar mitzvah celebration during the war. Benno was enrolled in the high school (Gymnasium) in Giessen, where he stayed with a Jewish family. Difficulties observing the Sabbath on Saturdays during the school time. Growing political interest and awareness. Benno Lederer became an ardent Pacifist and even started to study Esperanto. His plans to study medicine were shattered due to the economic crisis and inflation, which deprived his parents of their savings and made it impossible to pay the tuition fees. Benno got a position as a bookkeeper in a metal work in Frankfurt. In addition he attended night classes at university. Move to Hamburg. 1930 marriage with Margot Garcia de los Reyes, who came from a Sephardic family. Rising Nazism. Hitler's takeover and increasing anti-Jewish regulations. Birth of their son Rolf in 1935. Preparations to emigrate. Benno and Margot left Germany in 1936 via England and Madeira to South Africa. Arrival in Cape Town. Language difficulties and initial problems to get settled. Benno managed to get his mother out of Germany in 1938. Political situation and apartheid policy in South Africa. In 1956 Margot and Benno started their own business. Margot Lederer passed away in 1966. Benno Lederer moved to Israel in 1979.

Ursula lived with her parents in an apartment building in Schlierbach, near Heidelberg. She attended a private Jewish kindergarten. Ursula was frequently taken care of by relatives, since her parents were traveling a lot. After the early death of her mother, Ursula was taken care of by nannies. Friendly relations with her father’s first wife, the pianist Martha Heynemann and her half-siblings of that marriage. Trip to Holland via Cologne in 1929. In 1931 Ursula moved with her father to Berlin. Recollections of a somehow chaotic household, where she was left to herself frequently. She attended Tielien Schule. First signs of rising Nazism. Her father received a warning and fled to Holland during the elections in January 1933, when the Nazis came to power. Ursula was left to live with her father’s first wife, Martha. She joined her father in April of 1933 in Laren, Holland. She went to live with friends of her parents, the conductor Peter van Anrooy and his family in Hilversum. She learned Dutch and went to a Gymnasium in Hilversum. Language exchange trip to Paris in 1935 and London in 1937. German occupation. Marriage to Herbert Kalmann in 1940 and changing her name to Shulamith. Birth of their son Micky (Peter Kalmann) in 1941. Breakup with her husband in the same year and move in with her father. In 1943 they were forced to leave their apartment and move to Amsterdam. Deportation to Westerbork camp in June of 1943. Her father was deported to Auschwitz in November of 1943, where he died on arrival. Emergency affidavits for Shulamith, her son and her father arrived weeks after his deportation in Westerbork.
    Abstract: In 1944 Shulamit was transported with her son to Bergen-Belsen, where they waited for their exchange to Palestine. Description of the dreadful conditions of the camp. Start of the typhoid fever among camp inmates. In mid 1944 she was moved with her son to another part of the camp, where they were seperated from the main camp and lived under somehow improved circumstances, forming the Group 222 to be exchanged for German templars in Palestine. Transport to Palestine via Vienna and Turkey in June and July of 1944. Arrival in Haifa and start of a new life in a kibbutz.

Civil war in February of 1934 and banning of the social democratic party. Rising of National Socialism in times of unemployment and poverty. Recollections of Anschluss to Nazi Germany. Martin was forced to leave his school and enrolled in the Chajes Gymnasium. Description of frequent round-ups and humiliation by Nazi troops.
    Abstract: The family decided to leave the country and prepared their emigration. Martin joined the Zionist youth movement Makkabi Hazair and prepared for his emigration to Palestine. He was sent on Hachsharah to a chicken farm in Eichgraben, in the outskirts of Vienna, in November of 1938. During Kristallnacht, they were raided by a group of local Nazi youths and sent to a large estate (Schloss Walpersdorf), where they worked alongside non-Jewish co-workers. In April of 1939 Martin was sent to England for agricultural training. He worked in Llandegveth, in South Wales. His parents were banned to emigrate to England and went on an illegal passage to Palestine. Martin was accepted at a Youth Aliyah training center in Glamorganshire and worked on farms and as a groom for a physician in Hereford.
    Abstract: In 1940 he was arrested and interned as an "enemy alien" together with other refugees: rich cultural life among his fellow internees, who were largely intellectuals and socialists. Transport to the Isle of Man due to increased fear of a German invasion. He joined the British "Habonim" in 1942 and was sent to the "Beth-Challutz" in West Hempstead. “Blitzkrieg” and recollections of the V.E. day in London. In 1946 he joined an Israeli underground group for illegal emigration to Palestine. After some weeks at sea their ship was captured by the British and Martin and his inmates were sent to a camp in Cyprus. After 11 months he was released and was finally able to be reunited with his parents, who were living in Tel-Aviv. Martin joined the army and trained to be a radio operator. Army exchange trip to the United States. Work as an instructor in the Israeli Air Force and technical exchange trip to France, where he met his future wife Maya. Wedding in 1957 in Israel. 1961 immigration to the US to join Maya's parents. Birt oh their children Elia and Danny. Martin continued his studies at NYU, eventually settling with his family in Long Island.

    Abstract: Jack Baruch Keil starts his memoir with a brief description of his family's roots in Jaroslav, Poland. His parents had hardly any money, and moved to Berlin in the 1920s, where his father started a business, selling eggs. He was quite successful, even under the severe economic conditions in Berlin. There was also time for young Jack to go on vacations to the Baltic Sea. In 1933, things changed drastically. Nazis devastated his father's store, the eggs were an easy target for causing damage. The family decided to emigrate to Austria where they had relatives, in order to avoid the Nazi threat. His father managed to build up a new business, and young Jack enjoyed the widened family. The memoir also briefly mentioned the political situation in Austria during the 1930s when Austria's governing party suspended the parliament, the Nazis assassinated the chancelor Dollfuss, and when the Nazis annexed Austria in March 1938. Again, the family was persecuted and had to leave. But the family did not even have passports which made it even more complicated to get a visa for emigration. Finally, they all ended up in Belgium, although only his mother had a visa.

    Abstract: The memoir starts with the death of Gert Loellbach’s parents in a ship accident in 1932. Gert was sent to live with his aunt in Kreuznach and was suddenly confronted with rising antisemitism due to Nazi propaganda. In Kreuznach he suddenly belonged to a visible minority at school, whereas in Berlin half of the students had been Jewish. Orthodox Jewish life at his aunt’s house. Gert had been brought up in an assimilated Jewish family. He was forced to leave school before taking the final exams (Abitur) and started to work in a wood trading company of his father’s friend. Soon thereafter the company was confiscated. Gert belonged to the Jewish sports group "Kadimah". Zionist activities and agricultural education in preparation for Palestine. Incidents and threats by Nazi groups. Gert became a youth leader for the district of Essen. Preparation for the members to emigrate. Night of the November pogrom in 1938 and his arrest. He was spared deportation to a concentration camp and was freed due to the intervention of the rabbi of his home town. After his release he made his way to Berlin with the help of a nun. Endeavors to free his colleagues from the concentration camp. Difficulties to obtain visas. Plans to bring members of the Zionist groups to Palestine. Gert Loellbach’s activities were made known to the Gestapo and he had to leave the country. Exit permit for Sweden. Gert left Germany in time and started to prepare young "Hechaluzim" in Sweden for their emigration to Palestine - a program started by Emil Glueck. The outbreak of the war inhibited their further emigration. Fear of invasion of Nazi Germany in South Sweden. He worked together with the Jewish Agency and corresponded with various inmates of concentration camps, which meant a certain degree of protection for them. In 1940 Gert organized an initiative to rescue members of the Youth Aliyah and the Jewish population in Denmark after the German invasion.
    Abstract: A camp for the Jewish refugees was established near the Swedish port of Helsingborg. Difficulties to find work for the refugees. Gert was sent to Stockholm to represent the Hechaluz organization and open a "Palestinabuero" for the Jewish Agency. Reports of the fate of other refugees. Norbert Masur and the Bernadotte-Aktion to free 28.000 inmates in concentration camps in 1944.

    Abstract: The memoir is a translation of a diary written originally in Shanghai, during August and September of 1941, accompanied by clarifying correspondence and notes.
    Abstract: The memoir starts on March 6, 1939, the day when Jerry (Gerhard) Breuer was forced to say goodbye to Vienna. He went to Brussels, Belgium, on a Kindertransport. In 1940, on the day Germany invaded Belgium, he was arrested in Brussels. He was sent on a train (which had the letters “fifth column” written on it) to Camp St. Cyprien, France, which is described in detail. The memoir ends with the departure on his ship to Shanghai.
    Abstract: Also enclosed are 14 "Close shaves" by Jerry Breuer: The first "shave" describes the experience of “Kristallnacht” in November of 1938; he was arrested and brought to the Gestapo headquarters in the first district of Vienna, but then he was released because of his young age. The second episode is about the Kindertransport he took to get out of Nazi-Germany. The next episode is entitled “The certificate”, about the permission to enter the French Concession in Shanghai on May 5, 1939. Episode 4 happened when Jerry's train was bombed. The next one is about money being returned to him at Camp St. Cyprien. Then he resisted to be released from St. Cyprien camp. He lost his luggage on his way to Marseille, which helped sneak past some guards. He had an encounter with a friendly police officer who refused to send him to an internment camp; and he was lent money to pay for his exit visa. The final events took place on the voyage to Shanghai: once they were threatended by an ugly storm; the other time he was accused by a Dutch officer of being a spy for the German army, looking "too blond" for being a Jew.

    Abstract: The story of Arthur and Elly Von Halle portraits their escape from the Nazis. It was first written down in German by Elly, and in 1991 translated by their daughter Ursula Ettlinger. This is the English translation. The first event describes November 19, 1938, when the family learned that Jews were being arrested by the Gestapo in Hamburg, Germany where they lived. The children left for England and the USA. Arthur fled to Oslo, Norway, in May of 1939, and Elly joined him in November of 1939. They were then unable to proceed to the USA, because the Germans had invaded Norway. On October 26, 1942, they were about to be arrested by the Gestapo. Arthur faked a heart attack, which saved some time. They managed to escape to neutral Sweden, with the help of an underground organization. The escape was demanding and Arthur got sick. They remained in Sweden until the end of the war. After the war they immigrated to the USA, but Arthur never recovered from his ordeal during the war and died in 1948.

    Abstract: The memoir was written in the form of a reflective diary between 1983 and 1985 in the United States. Detailed and somewhat disorganized description of family background and family members until present time. His mother’s family came to Vienna during World War One. His father Osias Srulowitz served in the army and his parents got married after the war. His mother Klara Amalia Srulowitz founded the family’s knitting business during the war under her maiden name “K. Erber“. The author had an older sister (Stella), born in 1920, and a younger sister (Lotte) born in 1927. The family lived in the 9th district and had a maid and a French governess. His maternal grandparents were orthodox and had a lasting impact on his life. He studied the Hebrew alphabet with his grandfather at an early age and became religious. He went to “Schubertschule“ and later on to Realschule, then he transferred to public school. At age 14 he started an apprenticeship with his uncle in the plumbing business. Recollections of the Nazi takeover and the Kristallnacht in 1938. The family business was taken away. The author crossed the border to Belgium illegally, his parents emigrated to Shanghai in 1939. Recollections of life in Belgium. He was taken to a work camp for young refugees. After his release he took various jobs and lived underground with false papers during the German occupation. Marriage to Janine De Geyter, a young Belgian woman, in 1943. Liberation by the British army in 1944. Starting of a candy business. Reunition with his grandmother from Theresienstadt and his parents from Shanghai. Emigration to Israel together with the author’s parents in 1948. Description of life and new beginnings in Israel. Birth of their daughter Tamy. Emigration to the United States via Belgium in 1953. Life in the United States and detailed description of several business endeavors.

    Abstract: Apprenticeship as bookbinder at age of 14 in the town of Militsch (Posen); work in father's bookbinder's business; nightly study sessions with father, first in traditional Jewish learning, later in German literature; illness and loss of his job as court-file binder, the first in a series of misfortune; falling in love and marriage (1823); setting up marriage-contract; establishment of grocery store; fire destroyed his house and all its contents (1827); did not receive any compensation; had to supply large household (mother-in-law, brother, sisters, brothers-in-law and children); part of the family emigrated to USA and to Australia; only two children out of ten stayed in Posen; outbreak of cholera epidemic in Krotoschin; supervising construction of new synagogue; establishment of printing press; among his publications was Pentateuch in Hebrew with Johlson's German translation; employment of private tutor for Jewish education of his children; marriage of second daughter to the historian Heinrich Graetz five years after engagement, since Graetz did not find a suitable position earlier; marriage contract for Graetz; illness and economic ruin; revolution of 1848; opened tavern in addition to printing-press.

    Abstract: The memoir was written in 1958 in Austria. The physician Ernst Ritter describes his emigration to India and Shanghai in 1939. He was able to obtain a visa to India through the Austro-Indian Society, who conciliated physician exchanges to India. Ernst Ritter was offered a position as an assistant in a private hospital in Bombay. He left together with his wife for India via Denmark in April 1939. The British immigration office in Singapore regarded them as German spies and denied their visa for India. The only possibility for them was to go to Shanghai. Cultural differences and a high concentration of people in the city. With the help of a befriended Viennese physician he became a member of the Shanghai Medical Board. Network of German and Austrian refugee physicians and lawyers. Position in a hospital. Primitive circumstances. Confrontation with tropical illnesses. Fraud and crimes. Political tensions between China and Japan. Position in a Catholic missionary hospital in Wenchow, Central China, which was cut off from Shanghai due to the Japanese occupation of the coast. Confrontation with Trachom, the Egyptian eye disease and Bilharzia infection, an illness common among the Chinese rice-farmers. Orphanage of "unwanted female babies" at the missionary. Hygienic and nutrition insufficiencies among the Chinese inhabitants. Exit visa for Venezuela from his brother. Preparations for their immigration and language studies in Spanish. Journey to Venezuela via Japan and Los Angeles. Arrival in Caracas in September 1940. Difficulties in obtaining a position as a physician. In 1941 Ernst Ritter was offered the position of a "country physician" in Libertad in the Andes. Work under primitive circumstances in the midst of the jungle. Tropical climate and vegetation. Diseases due to nutrition insufficiencies. Confrontation with superstition and charlatans among the inhabitants. Position in Ospino and fight against a Malaria epidemic.

    Abstract: This memoir was written after 1945. In it, Paul Barnay describes his family history. His grandfather came from Slovakia and moved to Budapest in the early 19th century. Paul's father studied medicine and moved to Vienna. Paul Barnay's mother, Ilka Barnay, was a pianist and a writer. Paul was born after her second marriage in 1882. His parents converted to Christianity in order to legalize their marriage. Ilka Barnay was a talented woman who supported her husband with translations and piano lessons. Theater and cultural events were very important for the family, and Paul Barnay also describes enjoying playing soccer. He also recounts some experiences with anti-semitism.First experiences of anti-Semitism, and difficulties with his classmates due to his convert status. In 1903 Paul moved to Berlin, where he stayed with his uncle, the theater director Ludwig Barnay. Paul was an acting student at the "Reicher'sche Hochschule fuer dramatische Kunst". During this period he had several romances, and also fell into discord with his uncle. . After being in a number of productions, Paul was promoted to a position at the court theater in Neustrelitz.. From here he became a director of a play in Regensburg. His success in the theater world increased, and he began to travel with productions. In 1914 Paul married his long-time fiancé Lina and both were offered positions at a theater in Bremen. During World War I Paul served with the German military. Paul experienced the cultural life of Vienna, and met both Peter Altenberg and Anton Kuh. At the end of the war in 1918 he found a position as a theater director in Kattowitz. He directly experienced and describes in his memoir the Revolution of 1919, and the following integration of Silesia into Poland. He took a position as director in Breslau in 1921. His professional success increased throughout the Weimar period, and he received many offers from theaters across Germany for work.
    Abstract: When the Nazis seized power in 1933, Paul was arrested and then forced to resign from his theater in 1933. He fled first to Austria, and then to Hungary in 1938. He describes his life as a refugee, and the increasing threat of anti-Semitism in Hungary. With the German occupation of Hungary in 1944, Paul was forced into the Budapest Ghetto and had to submit to forced labor. He survived by going into hiding. Upon his liberation in 1945 he went to Vienna. In Vienna he received a position as a director of the "Volkstheater."

    Abstract: The memoirs were written in 1940. Vague childhood recollections of the author's father, who died unexpectedly in 1900 and left the family in a precarious financial situation. His mother worked as a seamstress, and his older siblings contributed to the income. After his school years Otto started working in a printing office. In the evenings he attended the commercial school "Alina" for two years. Memories of his leasure time in the ice skating rink and at dancing school. Position as an office clerk at an architect. Outbreak of World War One. Otto volonteered in 1915 and served in the artillery. He was stationed in Italy for almost three years and was decorated with the bronce medal of bravery. In 1917 his older brother Alfred was killed during battle. After the war Otto became a co-partner in his uncle's lumber business. Courtship and marriage in 1922. Honeymoon in Salzburg, Munich and Berlin. Business trips to France and Switzerland. Move to Salzburg, where Otto continued his lumber export business activities. "Anschluss" in 1938 and the terror of the Nazis. Detailed description of the liquidation of his assets. Due to business transfers prior to the Nazi-takeover he could save a good part of his fortune. Arrest and interrogation by the Nazi-officials. In 1938 he left Salzburg and tried to continue his business in Italy, France and Switzerland. Efforts to get family members out of Austria. In autumn 1938 he succeeded in getting his two children to join him in Bern. His wife Hilda was able to emigrate a few months later after a lot of difficulties. Due to their expiring visa they had to leave Switzerland for France.

The original memoirs end with the author’s 50th birthday in Frankfurt; five addenda were written in New York in circa 1943.

    Abstract: Memoirs of Nora Keizer who was deported to Westerbork in August 1942 after the death of her fiancé in Mauthausen; experiences in Westerbork concentration camp; courtship and marriage to Ernst Blumenthal, an "old-inmate", which prevented her deportation to the death camps; after hard physical labor Nora acquired a position at the registration office in Westerbork; brief reunion with her parents, who were sent to Poland in February 1943; Nora and Ernst Blumenthal were granted to move together in a small barrack; concerts and cultural activities of camp life; position in the camp hospital and kitchen; pregnancy; new regulations in Westerbork, which deprived the majority of the old-inmates from their protection.
    Abstract: Nora and Ernst Blumenthal were not spared deportation to Auschwitz in September 1943; arrival shock in Auschwitz; Nora found herself among a group of women who were selected for medical experiments; she underwent abortion in order not to be gassed; volunteering for medical experiments in order not to be deported to the hard labor and extinction camp Birkenau; death of her husband in the forced labor camp Buna; life in Auschwitz.
    Abstract: Due to the approaching Russian troops Auschwitz was evacuated in January 1945 - the prisoners were marched with hardly any clothes or food in almost unbearable conditions to another camp (death march); due to the exertions many died or were shot on the way; arrival in Ravensbrueck; Nora was taken with severe frostbites to the overcrowded camp hospital and was treated under primitive circumstances; liberation of Nora Keizer-Blumenthal in Ravensbrueck concentration camp; after liberation she was taken to Sweden.

    Abstract: Diary of a teenager describing the process of his emigration from Berlin. While attending school in France, Heinz also studied mechanics and agriculture to prepare himself for the future. He and his classmates were eventually able to enter the unoccupied part of France. In 1941, Heinz and his brother Walter left for the United States via Spain and Portugal, arriving in New York in June. Their final destination was Seattle via San Francisco.
