Abstract:
The Holocaust (as part of Nazi totalitarianism) and communism (epitomized in the Gulag camp system) challenge Catholic theology, demanding that it take a stand toward totalitarian regimes. Argues that Christianity does not bear responsibility for the Nazi genocide; Christian dogmatic anti-Judaism has nothing in common with Nazi racism. But Catholic theology did not relate to Auschwitz or to the Gulag, despite two encyclicals, against communism and against Nazism, issued by Pope Pius XI in 1937. Contends that the only correct stance the Catholic Church can take toward totalitarianism is to side with the persecuted.
