Abstract:
Recognition of the independent Serbian state by the Congress of Berlin (1878) was conditional on Serbia’s acceptance of complete equality of its Jewish citizens. The first Jewish MP was Avram Oserović, who was elected in 1877 as an honorary candidate for the then ruling Liberal Party. During the regime of the Progressive Party (1880-87), two permanent seats were kept for Jewish candidates, who were appointed by the ruler, Milan Obrenović, and not elected. Discusses the careers of Oserović and of two other prominent political figures - Vukašin Petrović (Schauengel), whose parents had converted to Eastern Orthodoxy, and Hajim S. Davičo. Discusses, also, the prevalence of antisemitism in Serbian society at that time.
