Abstract:
Analyzes the impossibility of a normal relationship between the State of Israel and Franco's Spain due to opposing political interests and orientations. Israel argued that Franco was Hitler's ally and thus contributed to the implementation of Nazi policies, and implicitly to the Holocaust. This argument was refuted in 1949 in a Spanish official propagandistic publication, "Spain and the Sephardic Jews", which misleadingly identified Sephardic Jews with Jews under Spanish protection and claimed that Primo de Rivera's decree of 1924 concerning Spanish citizenship was intended to apply to all Sephardic Jews and enabled them later to escape extermination by the Nazis. States that, in fact, only some 4,000 Sephardic Jews enjoyed Spanish protection, which did not protect them from discriminatory measures and deportation. Protection of Moroccan Jews had more to do with the dispute with Vichy France for sovereignty over the country than aid for the Jews.
