Abstract:
In 1938, according to a census carried out under the Racial Laws, only 119 Jews (some of them foreigners) were living in the province of Pesaro e Urbino. In spite of their insignificant number, the press of Pesaro city carried out a furious antisemitic campaign, warning the population of the "dangers" posed by the Jews. Although the reaction to this propaganda was indifferent, the Jews of Pesaro e Urbino were subjected to the same restrictions and persecution as in the rest of Italy. Under Nazi occupation, after September 1943, few Jews were deported to camps, thanks to the help of resistance fighters, state officials, functionaries of the Catholic Church, and private citizens.
