Kurzfassung:
In the ghetto of Theresienstadt there was an intense cultural life, which gave the prisoners a sense of identity and a feeling of normality. When "normalization of the ghetto" was promoted in 1942, cultural activities were not just tolerated but even encouraged. The performances included classical music, jazz, klezmer, and theater-cabaret. The pieces were often inspired by Jewish themes. It appears, however, that the composers had no intention to represent the gloomy atmosphere of the ghetto. Among the best-known of the composers were Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, Pavel Haas, and Hans Krasa; they all perished in Auschwitz.
