Abstract:
Antisemitism pursued and preoccupied Wassermann (1873-1934) from his childhood to the end of his life. Characterizations of antisemitism and the Jewish experience can be traced throughout his novels. However, it is in his essays - e.g. "Das Los der Juden" (1904), "Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude" (1921) - that his concern with this problem receives its most poignant expression. In most of his essays, he derives his conclusions from an interfusion of personal experience, historical events, and contemporary politics. His outlook on the problem of antisemitism was pessimistic. Public ostracism in the Nazi period precipitated his death.
