Abstract:
Discusses Uruguay’s immigration policy in the 1930s in the context of the incident involving the "Conte Grande" refugee ship. 68 German Jews in possession of visas delivered by the Uruguayan consulate in Paris were denied entry in February 1939. They were diverted to Buenos Aires and finally to Chile. States that, although traditionally open to immigration, Uruguay imposed restrictive laws beginning in 1932. Under the influence of the economic crisis and of Nazi and fascist ideologies, xenophobic and antisemitic political and journalistic groups called for a ban on Jewish immigration, stating that Jews were unassimilable and were communist agents.
