Abstract:
Contends that there was a distorted image of Judaism in the Russian culture of the late 19th-early 20th centuries (the "Silver Age"). This image may be seen in the writings of various "experts in Judaism", such as V.V. Rozanov and A.S. Shmakov, according to whom Judaism was an esoteric doctrine, containing sinister mysteries and rites which were known only to a few "ordained" persons, and involved the consumption of Christian blood. With the rise of mysticism in Russia in this period, such notions were widespread, and influenced the prosecution and the court during the Beilis case.
